Sheltered Instruction is… an approach for teaching content to English learners (ELs) in strategic ways that make the subject matter concepts comprehensible while promoting the students’ English language development.
Sheltered instruction draws from and complements high-quality instructional methods advocated for regular classrooms but adds specific strategies for developing English language skills.
The SIOP Model… • is an instructional framework for sheltered instruction. • was selected by MCSD for use by general education teachers to be trained (initially) by Pearson Education.
MCSD’s direction with The SIOP Model 2010-2011 2011-2012 Continue implementing the first four components: 3, 1, 2 & 8 Implement the remaining four components: 3, 4, 5 & 7 Implementation will be facilitated with the continued support of: District Administrators SIOP Coaches Modeling & Coaching Providing in district component review/practice sessions • K-12 initiatives – all buildings, all levels (mostly gen ed. teachers) • MCSD will be studying and implementing components 3, 1, 2 & 8 -- one component every two months • Implementation will be facilitated with the support of: • District Administrators • SIOP coaches • Modeling & Coaching (with the Pearson trained teachers) • Providing in district component review/practice sessions
The SIOP Model Adds key features for academic success • Language objectives in every content lesson • Development of background knowledge • Acquisition of content-related vocabulary • Emphasis on academic literacy practice
SIOP Lessons include… • required features for each lesson so teachers can accommodate the needs of students’ second language (L2) development • 30 SIOP features grouped into 8 components for making content comprehensible
SIOP Lesson Objectives include… • language and content objectives tied to the curriculum of the subject area SIOP brings together what to teach by providing a framework for how to teach it.
SIOP Lessons (cont’d.) include… • development of the students’ academic language (CALP) proficiency consistently and regularly • development of student language skills across reading, writing, listening, and speaking • high quality techniques characterized by careful attention to ELs’ L2 developmental needs
