Objectives The learner will be able to define the term Career The learner will be able to define and understand the different components of a Career The learner will understand stereotypes of a Career The learner will be able to distinguish between a Job, Profession, and Career
Discussion: • Authors of our book agree with Greenhaus and his colleagues that a career is best defined as “the pattern of work-related experiences that span the course of a persons life.” • Some separate the two. A profession could be considered something that does not require much background knowledge. It’s important to distinguish between these when analyzing what a career is. Jobs and Professions are usually associated as two aspects of a career. What do you think a Career is? Is a Career the same as a Profession? What is the difference between a Job, Profession, & Career?
Background Information • Traditionally a Career was viewed under a paternalistic paradigm • Employees felt that it was the organizations responsibility to guide them and essentially pave the way to “success” • Traditional success and career progress was defined in terms of promotion and pay increases • Presently there is the emergence of what is called “new” employment • Employees are expected to be much more self sufficient in guiding themselves to real life satisfaction and what they consider career success • However, employees do expect organizations to provide ways to grow in this new dynamic work environment
