EPIC Adventures In the dictionary, the word “epic” is defined as extending beyond the usual or ordinary, especially in size or scope. In our project, EPIC stands for Embedded Practices and Interventions with Caregivers Based on these two uses of the EPIC, please take a minute to think about how you would complete the sentence below. You might want to write down your response. We will discuss as a group. Helping caregivers to support child learning within everyday routines and activities is EPIC because….
Goals for Today’s Validation Panel Meeting • Introduce and describe two components of EPIC • Gather initial feedback about each component • Look closely at one part of each component • Gather initial feedback about content, design, format, and “fit” of the materials we are developing
The EPIC Partners • Florida State University • Juliann Woods, PI • Emily Lakey, RA • University of Illinois –Chicago • Chris Salisbury, Co-PI • AntonelaCiupe, RA • University of Florida • Patricia Snyder, Co-PI • Helena Mawdsley, RA • Consultants/Partners • Larry Edelman • Validation Panel Members • Website Design • Roland Riddell
With regard to providers… What would a provider need to knowand be able to doto implement a home visit that builds parent capacity to provide child learning opportunities during everyday routines and activities?
With regard to parents/caregivers… What would a parent/caregiver need to know andexperienceso that they feel confident in their ability to support their child’s learning in everyday activities and routines when the EI provider is not around?
EPIC: Two Components PROVIDER COACHING • Coaching framework and associated practices • Focus on building caregiver capacity using graduated support • Providers learn how to support caregivers to use the 5Q process • Modules, resources, and video clips to promote implementation 5Q PROCESS • Systematic 5-question process to help caregivers understand and intentionally embed targeted learning opportunities in everyday activities and routines • Promote positive child outcomes – focus on motor and communication skills
EPIC COMPONENT I:5 Q PROCESS TO SUPPORT EMBEDDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
The 5 Qs • What do I want to teach? • Why do I want to teach it? • Where/When/Who will teach it? • How will I teach it? • Is it working?
The 5 Q Process… • Is designed to enhance parent/caregiver capacity to support their child’s learning in everyday activities and routines • Is taught to parent/caregiver by the EI provider • Occurs as part of a triadic home visit interaction Let’s see short examples in action!
Digging Deeper with One of the Q’s: “How” • Learn about It • See it in Action
What do you think about the… • Utility of the 5Q approach for supporting embedded practices? • Clarity of the 5Q approach to support embedded practices? • Feasibilityof providers and caregivers using 5Q? • Acceptabilityof 5Q to providers and caregivers? • “Fit” of 5Q with your initial views about what parents/caregivers need to know and experienceso that they feel confident in their ability to support their child’s learning in everyday activities and routines when the EI provider is not around?
Anticipating potholes on our EPIC adventures… • Are we missing anything about embedded practices if we frame it using 5Q? • What challenges should we anticipate with respect to caregivers implementing 5Q?
EPIC’s Coaching Framework • SS: Setting the Stage • O: Observations • O: Opportunities • P: Problem Solving • RR: Reflection and Review
Provider Coaching • Is used to support and teach the parent/ caregiver to use the 5Q process • Involves specific coaching practices – SS-O-O-P-RR • Is implemented with fidelity • Occurs within the context of a triadic home visit session Let’s see what it looks like in practice!
Digging Deeper with One SS-O-O-P-RR:“Setting the Stage” • Learn about It • See it in Action
What do you think about the…? • Utility of the SS-O-O-P-RR coaching approach? • Clarity of SS-O-O-P-RR coaching approach? • Feasibility of providers implementing SS-O-O-P-RR coaching? • Acceptability of SS-O-O-P-RR to providers? • Logic of the SS-O-O-P-RR approach to support 5Q embedded practices? • “Fit” of SS-O-O-P-RR with your initial views about what a provider would need to know and be able to do to implement a home visit that builds parent capacity to provide child learning opportunities during everyday routines and activities?
Anticipating potholes on our EPIC Adventures… • Are we missing anything about coaching caregivers to implement 5Q if we frame it using SS-O-O-P-RR? • What challenges should we anticipate with respect to providers implementing SS-O-O-P-RR?
Preview Our Website • Take a peek at the website as it presently stands • What do you think about the…. • Look? • Navigation? • Organization? • Accessibility? • Recommendations moving forward? • Are we missing anything you think would help providers improve their coaching and their ability to use 5Q with parents?
What Happens Next? • Today • Complete a brief questionnaire • Complete honoraria paperwork • Next few months • Continue to provide input and feedback • We will be in touch in late spring THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Your contributions are important and valued!
