Morning and island man wakes up to the sound of blue surf in his head the steady breaking and wombing wild seabirds and fishermen pushing out to sea the sun surfacing defiantly from the east of his small emerald island he always comes back groggily groggily Comes back to sands of a grey metallic soar to surge of wheels to dull North Circular roar muffling muffling his crumpled pillow waves island man heaves himself Another London day
About the author • Grace Nichols was born in Guyana which is a country in the Caribbean • She immigrated to England at age 27 • She was thrust into a completely different culture and way of life • These changes are parallel to that of Island Man
Structure and language • Free verse- No rhyme scheme • 5 stanzas • First three stanzas are depicting one setting while the last two are depicting another • Only last three stanzas rhyme- speaks to structure of says in London • Alliteration with “groggily, groggily” and “muffling, muffling” • A lot of imagery throughout
