Knowledge Stations Jordan Telecenters Initiative • Mission • Establish Information Technology Community Centers (Knowledge Stations) Throughout the Kingdom that would: • Create ICT Awareness (reaching rural population and women) • Provide ICT access to all Jordanians (equal access). • Train Jordanians on new age skills. • Contribute towards Building an Information Society YN-NITC-Jan/05

Objectives Knowledge Stations Jordan Telecenters Initiative • Bridging the digital divide among various communities within the Jordanian Society. • Enhancing capacity building for local community development. • Promoting economic opportunities and sustainability. • Complementing other national (e-government, Connecting Jordanians, e-learning) initiatives. • Engaging local communities in socio-economic development. Knowledge Stations Jordan Telecenters Initiative • Organization Structure • Royal Commission for IT Community Centers, Knowledge Stations, was established, chaired by H.E. the Minister of Education and composed of four principle partners: • - Ministry of Planning. • - National Information Technology Center (Executing Agency). • - United Nations Development Programme. (UNDP) • - Badia Development Program. • A Project Management Unit (PMU was established within NITC. • Host Organizations-identified and contracted to manage the centers. YN-NITC-Jan/05

Services Offered Knowledge Stations Jordan Telecenters Initiative Current: Walk in Internet access and National Information System.Walk in ICT support (printers, faxes, etc.)E-learning / English Language skills.Pilot social development services (leadership training, special needs, etc.)Training (basic and advanced)Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet, ICDL, Cisco Net Academy, AutoCAD, etc.Business development services. Knowledge Stations Jordan Telecenters Initiative Relationship with other national ICT initiatives and programs • Ex Servicemen Training: Involving Several K.S’s in remote areas. • E-Learning Initiative: Compliment school activities. • E-Government Initiative: K.S’s will act as entry points and contacts sites. • The National Information System Network: All centers are connected online to NIS, • thus enabling citizens to access national information and data available on this • network. • The Enhanced Productivity Program (EPP): K.S’s act as vehicles for the provision • of consultations to help communities initiate income generating projects. • National Vocational Training Program: K.S’s are utilized in different locations YN-NITC-Jan/05

  13. Key Considerations for Future Development Knowledge Stations Jordan Telecenters Initiative • The JITCC initiative has evolved into a pioneering reference in bridging digital divides. It is becoming an example to follow by many countries in the region. • Planning to make the centers self-sustainable. Centers not capable of self-sustainability will be supported • Pursuing an aggressive marketing promotion strategy to engage Communities. • In the less populated areas satellite centers will be established to offer the services needed • The strategy entails building the capacity of local community host organizations such as youth clubs, municipal entities and NGO’s to allow them to assume a leading role in the future development of their communities.
