  3. Questions • Questions will be taken at the end of each page of the presentation • Participant lines will be muted during the presentation to reduce background noise • This presentation will be recorded and the link to the recording will be sent following the presentation

Differences Between Safe & Drug Free and Special Education Reports • IDEA requires additional items: • Total days of in-school suspensions per student • Total days of out-of-school suspensions per student • Services provided for expelled students • Definitions of weapons and drugs are different • SDE is attempting to combine the two reports for next year

  5. Getting Ready to Report • Collect the following information: • For each student with an IEP who was suspended or expelled: • Gender • Race/ethnicity • Disability • LEP status (yes or no) • Type of suspension: IAES, ISS, OSS • Total number of days for each type of suspension

  7. Log In: http://www.sde.idaho.gov/SpecialEd/Discipline/default.asp • Select your district & school • Password: same as CIP Tool or Accreditation password (Need password: email jtaylor@sde.idaho.gov with name of district and school)

  8. Report has 4 pages • Page 1: Interim Alternative Educational Setting (IAES) • Page 2: In-school & out-of-school suspensions • Page 3: Total incidents & days suspended • Page 4: Services during expulsions (Y or N)

  9. Resources on Opening ScreenHELP! • Note print button icon beside each page • Print a blank working copy • Print a final copy for your file • Note “Final Submit” button location

  10. General Information • Include discipline events only for students on IEPs (ages 3-21)…NOT 504s • Covers the entire 2007-2008 school year • Definitions are included in the “Instructions” document - located on the opening page of the Discipline Report site

Page 1: Placement in an Interim Alternative Educational Setting (IAES) • Col. 1A Number of Children • Col. 1B Drug Offenses • Excludes alcohol and tobacco • Col. 1C Weapon Offenses • Excluding a knife with blade less than 2 ½ inches • Col. 1D Serious Bodily Injury • Substantial risk of death • Refer to “Instructions” for definitions (p. 1-2)

  12. Page 1: Placement in an Interim Alternative Educational Setting (IAES) • Scenario: White, male, ED, non-LEP student brings a pistol and threatens a student. When he is searched, tobacco is found in his pocket. • Administrator suspends the student pending an expulsion hearing • The IEP team meets for a manifestation determination and decides how and where services will continue on the 11th day of suspension (IAES) • The student is educated in the IAES for 45 days before returning to the school

Page 1 Column 2: • IAES placement as a result of a hearing officer’s determination of likely injury • Impartial hearing officer appointed by the SDE • Result of an expedited hearing request • Decision is based on a determination that maintaining the child’s current placement is substantially likely to result in injury to the child or others • IEP team is responsible for determining what the interim alternative educational setting looks like

Page 2 Scenario • The gun incident was not the first behavior event for our ED, White, Male, non-LEP student you met in Scenario 1. • On another occasion he cussed at the teacher and was suspended in-school for 1 day; he also engaged in a fight and was suspended out of school for 3 days. • The school also had a female, Asian, Health Impaired, LEP student who stole money from the teacher and was suspended out of school for 3 days.

  29. Page 4: Services During Expulsion • Page 4 applies only to students who are expelled • Compares services for expelled with and without disabilities (no legal requirement to offer services to non-disabled expelled students) • When finished, hit the “Save & Return” button

  30. Final Submit • After selecting “Save & Return” on p. 4, click on “Final Submit” • Hopefully you won’t see any error messages!

  31. Possible Error Messages: Click “Cancel” and go back to fix WARNING!!! In the Disability subgroup, the total number of children suspended for more than 10 days (page 3 column 5D) must be greater than, or equal to the number of students reported in the following columns: 1A (p.1), or 3B (p.2) or 4B (p.2). Please correct this data and return to this page for a final submit.In the Race/Ethnicity subgroup, the total number of children suspended for more than 10 days (page 3 column 5D) must be greater than, or equal to the number of students reported in the following columns: 1A (p.1), or 3B (p.2) or 4B (p.2). Please correct this data and return to this page for a final submit.In the Gender subgroup, the total number of children suspended for more than 10 days (page 3 column 5D) must be greater than, or equal to the number of students reported in the following columns: 1A (p.1), or 3B (p.2) or 4B (p.2). Please correct this data and return to this page for a final submit.
