Location • Yellowstone National Park is located primarily in Wyoming (96%). • Parts of the park also extend into Idaho (1%) and Montana (3%). • The area of the park is 3,468.4 square miles. • It is 63 miles from north to south and 54 miles from east to west (by air). • Background • Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872. • It was American’s first national park. • It is one of the last nearly intact natural ecosystems in the temperate zone. • The park is home to wide variety of wildlife. • The park is also home to the majority of the world’s geysers, including the famous Old Faithful. • Wildlife • The park is home to wide variety of wildlife. This includes: • Grizzly bears • Wolves • Bison • Elk • and many others • The bison herd in Yellowstone is the largest public herd in the United States • Wolves were once completely eliminated from Yellowstone but have been successfully reintroduced. • Elk make up the largest population of mammals in the park.
