  11. Is My Child Ready for Bluefins? • The answer to this question depends on age group. Older children are expected to be able to do more than the younger swimmers. • As long as a swimmer meets the minimum requirements for 5-6 year olds, they are welcome to the team. • If a swimmer is lacking basic skills for his/her age group, they are still welcome to participate. However, swimmers may need to get additional instruction outside of practice.

  12. Bluefins Swimmers • Swimmers should not be afraid of the water. They should be able to stand on the side of the pool, jump in the deep end, and swim to the side unaided. • Swimmers should be able to float on their stomach and their back. • Swimmers should be able to propel themselves forward, unaided for a distance of at least 5 meters.

  13. This is what 90% of our swimmers can do on the first day of practice. • 5-6 Year olds can jump in the deep end with no fear. They can float on their back and they can do freestyle if only for a short distance. • 7-8 year olds can swim 25-yards freestyle and they can kick on their back for 25-yards. • 9-10 year olds can side breathe on freestyle, they can swim 50-yards backstroke, they can dive from the side, their breaststroke kick is legal, and they can swim butterfly. • 11-ups know how to compete in all races. This includes proper starts, turns, and strokes.

  14. Pool Safety • Coaches are responsible for swim lanes only. • Swimmers under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. • Children who are dropped off early or picked up late must exit the pool and wait on the pool deck. No unattended children in the pool as there is no lifeguard on duty • Although there is no lifeguard on duty, there are some general pool rules we would like to see obeyed because it is very dangerous to swimmers: • No Running and jumping into the pool. • No Flips or back dives off the side of the pool • No Rough play.

  15. When to Talk to the Coaches • Coaches are engaged with swimmers during practice. • Arrange to speak with coaches outside practice via email • Notify the coaches early if you must miss a meet – they need time to select swimmers for relays and events.

  16. If You Must Miss a Meet • Swimmer should write their name on the coach’s clipboard. • Clipboard is on the table by the shed
