“ILOVEYOU”Virus By Alyssa Sedlak
Love Letter Worm • This worm arrived by e-mail on May 4, 2000 • The subject was simply “ILOVEYOU” and held an attachment named “LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU”
What did it do? • The worm sent a copy of itself in the Windows Address Book and with the user’s sender address • It had the ability to overwrite several types of files • It also changed registry keys
How it was fixed • Symantec Anti-Virus Research Center created fixlove.exe • The virus was spotted on May 4 and the fix was released on May 8
Impact • 50 million infections were reported • Caused $5.5 billion in damage • Most of the damage cited was the time and effort spent getting ride of the worm
Onel A. De Guzman • Thinks you do not destroy when cracking • He did not confess to creating the virus • Says it could have been his • Also says he might have released it (I find him very confusing…)
How to prevent getting the loveletter virus • Update anti-virus product • Disable windows scripting host • Disable active scripting in internet explorer • Disable auto-DCC reception in IRC clients • Filter the worm in e-mail • Exercise caution when opening attachements
What to do if you get this virus • Run fixlove.exe • Delete the following files: MSKernal32.vbs in the Windows System Directory, Win32DLL.vbs in the Windows Directory, LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs in the Windows System, WinFAT32.EXE in the internet download directory, Script.ini in the mIRC directory
