  3. About Bentley User GroupVictoria Australia (BUGVA) The Bentley User Group Victoria Australia was originally the Intergraph User Group until around 1997 when Adam Lambert volunteered as President and along with a few others started as the Bentley User Group.

  5. About Bentley User GroupVictoria Australia (BUGVA) We are a volunteer organisation and we provide help and information for a variety of Bentley & third party software packages to users from all disciplines, CAD Managers, & other interested people.

  6. Collaboration There is a word becoming more common in general everyday discussion, and we are hearing it used in all sorts of context.

  7. What does Collaboration mean? Collaboration means in general: A cooperative arrangement in which two or more parties (which may or may not have any previous relationship) work jointly towards a common goal.

  8. What is Collaboration for us? Collaboration within our industries is all members of a project team working jointly towards the project deliverables, including owners/clients, and members from joint parties, contractors, sub-contractors, and consultants, etc.

  9. Why Collaborate? Saves money. Better outcomes. Saves time. Learn more. Under budget. Job satisfaction. Less effort. Two heads > one. Less stress. More efficient.

  10. When to Collaborate? A multidiscipline project. A multi company project. Individual company project with multi disciplines or departments. Complex projects with short deadlines. • Sooner the better.

  11. Current Industry Collaboration Most companies are still doing things the same old way. Infrastructure is now demanding much larger projects to be completed on time, and within budget. Some companies implementing BIM and Collaboration, but most are struggling with the BIM concept. No Australian standards, should we adopt British standards? We need to get Governments to provide more support for BIM implementation.

  12. What are governments doing? Whilst Australia continues to debate the merits of whether we should have a whole of government or whole of industry taskforce and whether to mandate or not to mandate BIM, the UK has quietly launched the Level 3 BIM Strategic Plan 12 months prior to the end date for the Level 2 Plan which has netted the UK government an estimated £840 million in savings.

  13. What are governments doing? In 2015-17 the Victorian Government committed to the pilot of BIM on a number of projects in Victoria to provide the Government with an understanding of the opportunities to improve project efficiency, delivery outcomes and lifecycle management.

  14. What are governments doing? In March 2016 the Government committed to advance the use of BIM in the Construction Technologies Sector Strategy. ? The pilot combined with the Construction Technologies Sector Strategy, will guide the Government on future directions. This work will be done in consultation with the Commonwealth Government.

  15. BIM and Collaboration? BIM mandated for British projects. (Crossrail Project) BS1192, and associated ISO standards. Australian standards? Adopt BS1192? BIM Levels 0 – 3 Current practice in BIM mostly Level 0 and 1 BIM Level 2? - BIM Level 3? So what is BIM?

  16. What is BIM? To put it in simple terms, BIM is a process described as ‘digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a project creating a shared knowledge resource for information about it forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life cycle, from earliest concept to demolition.

  17. BIM Levels Explained BRITISH STANDARDS. BS 1192 for BIM Levels 0, 1, 2, & 3. • BIM Level 0 • is related to using simple CAD for creating 2D documentation. • Separate sources of information covering the basic assets information in paper documents.

  18. BIM Levels Explained • BIM Level 1 • is advancing the CAD to using 2D & 3D with some standardisation and data connectivity for creating documentation. • Separate sources of information covering the range of assets information in semi-structured electronic documents.

BIM Levels Explained • BIM Level 2 • is advanced 3D modelling with connected data using a Common Data Environment (CDE) and standards to ensure collaboration of all disciplines to achieve integrated, interoperable data. • Federated file based electronic information with some automated connectivity.

  20. BIM Levels Explained • BIM Level 3 • is the lifecycle asset management of a project using the existing data from BIM Level 2 as a base. • Integrated electronic information with full automated connectivity and web-stored.

  26. How can User Groups Help? Share BIM and Collaboration information with others. Link information through the user groups. Continue to Collaborate. Identify the areas where users need help. We also recognise that some information in this area is Confidential or Intellectual Property, and will avoid any unwarranted disclosure.

  27. What is BUGVA doing to help? Bentley User Group Victoria Australia will categorise aquired material for users to access when required. Examples: • Translations to and from the different file formats – developing best practices for the most common situations. (iModel, IFC, DWG) • Implementation of various Company/Client/Project Standards – sharing existing, and developing the implementation (Road/Rail standards)

What is BUGVA doing to help? • Sharing best practices for creating compatible outputs that can be used efficiently, and by all project parties. • BIM Implementation. • Information now available: • BS_1192_2007-A2-2016 (Naming Conventions) • PAS_1192-2-2013 (Construction Phase BIM) • PAS-1192-3 (Information for Asset Operation) • BS_1192_4-2014 (Collaborative production of information) • PAS_1192_5-2015 (Asset Management) • BS_8536_1-2015 and BS_8536_2-2015
