  3. Living things in the woodland might be hiding in trees or under the soil.

  4. Animals in the ecosystem can survive the cold winter months.

  5. Woodland animals look for food in the tree tops and under the trees.

  6. The raccoon lives in the woodland. It depends on trees like the oak trees for food and shelter.

  7. The raccoon makes a den in a hollow of the oak tree or in areas in or around the oak tree.

  8. Raccoons eat the acorns that grow on the oak trees.

  9. Raccoons eat the eggs from birds nests that are found in the oak tree.

  10. Raccoons eat earthworms found in the ground near the oak tree. Birds like the robin also eat earthworms.

  11. The earthworms help the oak tree survive. They give air to the soil.

  12. The acorns on the oak tree are seeds. The acorns that make it to the ground make more oak trees. Raccoons and other animals and birds help carry the seeds around the woodland.

  13. The great horned owl lives in or near the oak tree.

  14. The great horned owl eats baby raccoons and birds. The great horned owl also eats rodents like mice and reptiles.

  15. Predators, like the bobcat, hunt raccoons and live in the woodland. They also eat other woodland animals, such as squirrels, rabbits and even deer.

  16. Animals like the possum eat dead animals. What is left from dead animals turn back into soil to help the plants and trees such as the oak tree.

  17. The woodlands are full of trees, such as conifer trees, maple trees, and birch trees.

  18. Many plants grow around the woodlands, such as ferns, moss and holly. These are used for protection and food.

  19. Many other animals live in the woodlands. A variety of birds, squirrels, rabbits, deer, rodents, such as mice and reptiles like snakes and turtles.
