  1. Phylum Mollusca

  2. General Characteristics: • Coelomates – true body cavity • Bilaterial symmetry • Most have external shell, foot, mantle, & visceral mass • Mantle – thin layer of tissue that covers most of the body • Visceral mass - internal organs

  3. General Characteristics: • Feeding method: • Herbivores, carnivores, filter feeders, detritivores, or parasites • Radula – tongue-shaped structure used for feeding by snails and slugs • Respiration: • Aquatic - gills (oxygen & carbon dioxide diffuse) • Land – moist mantle cavity

  4. General Characteristics: • Circulation: • Open circulatory system – in slowing moving mollusks (snails, clams, etc) • Closed circulatory system – in faster moving mollusks (octopus, squid, etc) • Excretion: • Use nephridia

  5. General Characteristics: • Response: • Simple nervous system – small ganglia (two-shelled mollusks) • Complex nervous system – brain (octopus) • Movement: • Secrete mucus & move over surface using a rippling motion - snails • Jet propulsion - octopus

  6. General Characteristics: • Reproduction: • Sexual • Fertilize internally (those w/ tentacles) or externally (those w/ shells) • Some are hermaphrodites • Trochophore larva – free-swimming

  7. General Characteristics: • Habitat: • Marine or Terrestrial • Ecology: • Some photosynthetic • Provide habitats for other marine animals

  8. Class Bivalvia(2 shells w/ hinge) Mantle Muscular foot – used for digging Filter feed by siphoning water Visceral mass Shell Concentrated pollutants and microorganisms in their tissues  effect humans Siphons Ecologically these are used to monitor water quality Foot

  9. Class Gastropoda(stomach foot) Movement – use slimy muscular foot Visceral mass • General Information • Shell-less or single shell • Protection • Shell • Stay hidden • Squirt ink • Produce poison – bright colored bodies Mantle Shell Gut Head Foot Radula

  10. Class Celphalpoda(head foot) Tentacle Arm Visceral mass Head • General Characteristics: • “Foot” Divided into tentacles/arms • Small internal shells or none • Complex eyes • Highly developed brain Internal Shell Mantle Gut
