Mermaids have a body of a woman and a fish tail. • People say they live in the ocean. • The first stories say about the goddess Atargatis which transformed herself into a mermaid out of shame for accidentally killing her human loved one . • People often connect Mermaids with bad things such as floods, storms, shipwrecks and drowning , and other times with good . • Some characteristics of Mermaids are related with the Sirens of Greek mythology. • The Mermaids are often used in operas, paintings, books, films and comics. A well known book is Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Little Mermaid“.
