Innovation Feasibility study for first mobile app, “FairFinder”, in Wales to provide comprehensive information regarding the availability of fair trade products to consumers and to help businesses, volunteers and local council in their goal to promote sustainability. Design approach Focus groups and interviews will be conducted with the general public and local businesses in Cardiff. We will also initiate discussions with Cardiff Council to understand their viewpoint, as fair trade is part of their wider sustainability goals. FairFinder
Relation to the urbanscape The idea of developing the “FairFinder” was conceived as part of an ongoing academic research project, with citizens in Cardiff, demonstrating their concern regarding information and availability of fair trade products. The project also aligns with Cardiff Council’s aims to promote sustainability as part of their smart city initiatives. Therefore, this city provides a feasible setting to collaborate with the local council, general public and local businesses promoting fair trade. FairFinder
FairFinder Scaling up prospects As fair trade is a global issue, therefore, the “FairFinder” project will not be limited to Cardiff. We are collaborating and consulting with expert mobile app developers, local councils and businesses for both technical and content related aspects of the app. The scaling up of the project is being considered where the app will be developed on larger consolidated mobile app based platforms throughout the UK. The information from the feasibility study in Cardiff will help in the replication of the project in other cities as well. We, therefore, aim to extend the application of “FairFinder” to other cities in the UK and subsequently develop a global reach.
