KULDĪGA Kuldīga is the pearl of Kurzeme, Latvia's western region. Kuldīga boasts distinctive architecture, the River Venta with the widest waterfall ledge in Europe, and an old brick bridge. Kuldīga was recognized an EDEN destination in 2007.
THE VENTA WATERFALL The Venta waterfall (Ventas rumba) is the widest waterfall in Europe. This 249 meter wide naturally formed waterfall is associated with a number of legends and historic events. Because of the device for catching fish which was invented by Duke Jacob, in old times Kuldīga was known as a town where salmon were caught in the air.
THE VENTA WATERFALL An interesting phenomenon can be observed near the waterfall in spring and autumn when spawning fish try to get over the waterfall by jumping through the air. While the beauty of the Venta waterfall is not the wild, breathtaking beauty of the major waterfalls in the world, the Venta waterfall and the old brick bridge still create the impression of an idyllic, quiet town. Looking from the side of the bridge, it seems to be just a small waterfall. To appreciate its true beauty, one must spend at least ten to fifteen minutes there and climb down to one of the river banks.
THE OLD BRICK BRIDGE ACROSS THE VENTA RIVER The old brick bridge across the Venta was built in 1874 and is the longest bridge of this kind of road bridge in Europe – 14 m. It was built according to 19th century standards – 500 feet long and 26 feet wide, allowing two carriages to pass. It consisted of seven spans of brick vaults. During World War I two of the spans were blown up.
THE HISTORICAL CENTRE OF KULDĪGA Kuldīga is a small and attractive town in Kurzeme which has always been admired and praised by poets and painters. The city centre, which developed in the 17th –18th centuries, has still preserved the old wooden buildings which form small and narrow streets.
THE HISTORICAL CENTRE OF KULDĪGA Narrow streets, peculiar one-storey houses with a chimney in the middle, and red roof tiles are still preserved in the historical centre. In 1368 Kuldīga became a Hansetic City. Kuldīga town had neither modern roads, nor a railway which would change its architecture, so the town has preserved the provincial style typical of it, which has also granted to it the status of cultural historical heritage.
ALEKŠUPĪTE WATERFALL It was fixed and built up in the 17th century to use the stream tooperate the first paper-mill in Kurzeme. As the waterfall is created artificially and is located next to the unattended mill building, it does not look especially attractive. The upper part of the waterfall is fixed by setting refractory bricks. A dam is built above the waterfall. About 30 meters down the stream, Alekšupīte has another small terrace.
