November 2-3: “The Lottery” Reading Qs • IN p. 41 • Text p. 25 • Answer the following questions while we read: • What can you infer about the village and its people? • Describe Mr. Summers based on his responsibilities and the way others react to him. • What might a “perfunctory chant” suggest about past lotteries? • How does Old Man Warner feel about the lottery? • Describe Mrs.Hutchison’s behavior and reaction from the other villagers? • What expectation did you have about the lottery at the beginning of the story? How did that expectation change?

  3. November 4-5: “The Lottery” Analyze the Text • IN p. 42-43 • Text p. 36 • Answer Qs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 • Please restate the question in the form of an answer and use textual evidence to support them.

  4. November 6: “The Lottery” Performance Task • IN p.44 • Text p. 36 • Complete the Performance Task in your notebook. Remember: • It should be written as a letter • It should include evidence from the text • It should respond to the full prompt.

  5. November 6: “The Lottery” Post Reading Questions • IN p.45 • Text p. 25 • Answer the following questions in full sentences. • “The Lottery” is a story with a dystopian society. Explain why it is dystopian. Use evidence from the text to prove your response. • What elements of this story feel more utopian? • What kind of control(s) takes place in the story? (Refer to your notes!)

  6. “The Lottery” Summative • Turn in your notebook and homework • Collect a manilla folder and a sheet of loose leaf paper. • Your desk area should be clear of everything except your testing materials. • Title your page as “The Lottery” Summative and fill out the rest of the header. • DO NOT WRITE ON MY COPY OF THE TEST! • You have the entire class period to complete the exam. • Turn in your answer sheet and my blue copy of the test to the back table. • If you have extra time, work silently on missing assignments. • Good Luck!
