  2. Participating in a marathon should be a rewarding experience that pushes your mind and body to safe limits. However, lost in the training plans and distance covered is the mental aspect that drives most athletes. Running a marathon, for example, is a mental challenge that requires focus, patience, resilience and control.

  3. As LTG Mary Legere knows, taking care of the mind is just as important as the physical exercises you undertake.

  4. Mental Attitude It’s your inner attitude that determines how you approach and tackle challenges. What you tell yourself at any moment will determine how you feel come race day. If your inner voice is negative and full of anxiety, you are going to have a hard time. As early in the preparation period as you can, start feeding positive thoughts and encouragement in your mind. Repeat words and phrases that show how confident, relaxed and calm you are about the race.

  5. Visualize Success Visualizing yourself finishing the race is helpful to some extent. While it gives you the confidence that you can perform up to standards, what you want to visualize is you doing the actual things that help you cross the finish line. It’s more like rehearsing the race in your head and seeing yourself do the right things.

  6. Set Goals Once you embark on a run, don’t go too far ahead. Rather than think of the 26.2 miles ahead, set small goals that help you tackle the challenge. Small goals like the next mile marker or the trees in the distance help you focus as you run.

  7. LTG Mary Legere is an avid runner and fitness enthusiast. She has competed in 15 marathons, and is currently looking forward to competing in another this year, while preparing to challenge herself for a half Iron Man next year.
