History • Started in Croydon in 1861 • Previously South London YMCA • SLYMCA formed in 2005: merger of Croydon YMCA and YMCA of Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark; ECYMCA merger 2013 • We were an independent, local organisation affiliated to national and international YMCA federation - one of c.120 local YMCAs in England • Disaffiliated from YMCA: 31 August 2015 • New name and brand launched: 7 September 2015 • Merger with Grenfell Housing and Training: 1 April 2017
Aims and mission • We are a homelessness and community support charity, working with 2000 people each year in and around London. • Our aim is to help children, young people and adults who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to become independent and resilient. • We believe in building on people’s strengths, aspirations and goals to help them break the cycle of homelessness.
Where we work and what we do • Services in 8 London boroughs: Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham, Bromley, K & C, Merton, Wandsworth and Kingston • £12.7m turnover • 679 housing customers; c.200 community services customers • +/- 210 staff • Supported housing for vulnerable people of all ages • Community services: mentoring, health and wellbeing, work and learning • Conferencing and LEYF nursery

Complexity of need The data below is a snapshot, focussed on the combination of needs. In total, 56% of current customers have two or more of these needs:
Health and Wellbeing • Funded by the Big Lottery Fund • Approach that is mindful of previous trauma • Can work with complex needs towards recovery • Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners and peer advisors • Teams are trained and supported in this approach (reflective practice, debriefing)
Counselling • Supporting customers with their mental health and wellbeing • Funded by City Bridge Trust since 2015 • Offered over 1000 appointments • Engaged with over 150 customers • 14 trainee counsellors currently volunteering
Work and Learning • Reaching Communities Fund (3 years) – now Rough Sleeping Fund money • Customer Employment Partnership • Croydon Health and Employment Partnership • Reboot UK - Digital inclusion • Financial Inclusion • Employment opportunities provided by companies such as KPMG and Waitrose • Community Connectors • Certificate of Entrepreneurship
Work and Learning outcomes • Improved literacy: 196 people vs target of 106 • Improved numeracy: 149 people vs target of 106 • Better management of substance misuse: 214 people vs target of 133 • Better management of mental health issues: 276 people vs target of 266 • Getting into paid work: 160 people vs target of 65
Peer Circles • Three year project funded by ESF and Big Lottery • Works with people with complex needs • 1:1 coaching ultimately focused on employment • Delivered in partnership with St Giles Trust across all boroughs south of the river • Peer advisors give support and complete IAG level 3 award
Horizons Mentoring Programme • BBC Children in Need since 2015 • Working in partnership with schools to support children at risk of exclusion aged 11-16 • 90 children supported each year to build their confidence, resilience and improve their educational attainment • Over half of mentees improved their attitude towards school • “I would love to travel and if I hadn’t had a mentor I wouldn’t have even considered that possibility” Crystal, Evolve mentee
