PDM Integration of FEA Design processes • iMAN and DesignSpace – • CADFEM Usermeeting 2002 • Peter Binde
Content - Dr. Wallner Group - iMAN, DesignSpace and Unigraphics - Why Integrating FEA in PDM - Requirements for the Integration - UG Concept of Master Model - Variants for DesignSpace iMAN Data model - How to Implement - How it looks like
Dr. Wallner Group Consulting and Service around CAD, CAE, PDM Competences: - Process-analyses and -syntheses - Trainings and workshops - User-support and hotline - FEA / MKS analysis and design - Integration-solutions and software-development
Dr. Wallner Group • 30 Persons, 10 Years Experience • Focus on Unigraphics, iMAN • Locations: Bremen • Wiesbaden • Stuttgart • München
iMAN, DesignSpace and Unigraphics • Present Situation: • More and more FEA becomes the designers daily work • PDM is established for CAD Applications • iMAN/Unigraphics products and DesignSpace are from different companies, ... • Questions: • - Integration? • Will there be an interface? • Will it be supported? • This Article: • Shows a way to encapsulate DesignSpace in iMAN. • Demonstrates processes for CAD/FEM integrated in PDM
Why Integrating FEA in PDM Improve Communication and Data-Retrieval: - Better security of data - Better data exchange - Data-retrieval from different users, departments, locations - Restrictions possible - Data is always up to date - Integration / Comparison of FEA and prototype-testing Improve Documentation: - Documentation of A-B changes - Easier selection of „Carry-Over“ parts - Documentation for quality-insurance needs
Why Integrating FEA in PDM Use of digital Workflow Support: - Prove, release, change processes Reusage of FE Data: - Use of FE-data for knowledge reuse - Digital-Mock-Up using FE-data: Reusing meshes or the stiffness of piece parts in FEA or MKS for assemblies.
Requirements for the Integration Keep DesignSpace / UG native possibilities: - Associativity to CAD geometry, parameter-transfer - Transfer of attributes from CAD to FEM (Ex. Shell thickness) - Transfer of weld point-info from CAD to FEM - Keep normal usage (starting DesignSpace from UG) Integrate Geometry Preparation: - Provide all CAD methods to prepare the geometry - Do not change the original part
Requirements for the Integration Other Requirements: - Provide overriding of CAD geometry-parameters (For optimisation of different parameters) - Organize the DesignSpace report - Provide export and import of all related data from the database

How to Implement 1. Create a new dataset type or modify one of the existing - Insert as reference: UG (*.prt) - Insert as reference: DesignSpace (*.dsdb) 2. Create a new tool - Let the new tool start DesignSpace - Let the tool work on the new dataset type That‘s it!
How it looks like • Item-ID and Item-Name • Revision (A) • Folder for FEM Datasets • New FEM Dataset: • Can be opened by: • - UG: For Geom. Prep • DesignSpace: FEM • Original Geometry • Dataset
