Research Tips: Customize Your News – Alternatives to Google Reader Library and Research Services
Session Overview Three approaches to news reading: • Search alerts:research specific topic, person, phrase • RSS feed readers: read on broader topics, from many sources • Browse platforms: learn about new sources Online Research Guide: http://cfr.libguides.com/googlereader Reduce reading overload: Skip the spam and save time without missing what’s important
Search Alerts Most research-driven method: known, narrow interest Track mentions of fellow online (*check with Communications too) Benefits: • streamlined: check fewer places for articles; skip spam, ads • automated: most relevant articles delivered to you • customizable:you specify keywords, sources, frequency • credible: drawing from important sources
RSS Feeds RSS feeds vs. search alerts: • Receive an overview of several topics and sources simultaneously • No sorting through individual emails • Some readers allow: categories, feed search, tags, highlighted keywords • Alert emails won’t get lost in spam or archive folders • Email feeds in Outlook may slow it down Feedly: • Add and search for new feeds by URL/tag/topic/category/most popular • Add search alerts from websites, search engines, blogs, and/or databases • Mobile app: Mark favorite sources as “Must Read” • Several viewing options and apps available (including recommended feeds) • Delete read stories or save for later • Tags vs. categories • Separate feeds by source type and usage (e.g. “IR Blogs,” “U.S.-based news sources,” “Business News”) • Tags for multiple research topics across several categories
RSS Feeds Feedly browser extension (Firefox, Chrome): • Add, save and share feeds and/or articles directly from the source • No need to log into Feedly Other RSS reader features: • Curata Reader and G2 Reader: • Search within feeds • “Teach” your source and keyword preferences • Limit by and/or highlight key words within articles • Digg Reader: Shows which articles from your sources have been most frequently shared
Discovery/Browse Services Differences between Discovery and some RSS readers/search alerts • Better for browsing, than following topic • Personalized: learns what you click on, suggests similar feeds. • (Some feed readers have too!) • Magazine-like • More socially-driven Taptu • “Stream Store”/Add Stream: topical, source, featured, new streams currently no database feeds • “Split” sources into new stream (including for keyword search) • Related articles Other kinds: Newsmap; Noowit/Flipboard
