Railroads Come to Georgia • More efficient way to travel. • 1833, Georgia Railroad Company builds railroad westward from Augusta to Madison, Eatonton and Athens. • Central railroad extended from Savannah to Macon. • Towns grow around railways.
Government and Town Planning • After GA became a state, towns sprang up at crossroads, ferry landings, railroad stops, or other places people gathered to trade. • Ceded Indian territory was reserved for towns with laid out streets, lots for pubic buildings and town lots sold to settlers. • From 1803-1828, Creeks give up land and government plans three cities for development.
Milledgeville served as state capital, Macon and Columbus formed along the Fall Line. • All became major centers for trade. • State government planning contributed to Georgia’s economic prosperity in the early 1800’s.
