The Role of IT in Education • IT is playing an ever increasing role in delivering education and educational resources to Students. • IT is a key resource for Teaching Staff for lesson planning, preparation and delivery. • IT is an essential tool for the Management of educational establishments.
Some Facts • Traditional IT delivery is NOTGreen • A standard desktop PCs consumes 250watts per hour (420Kw per school year) • A standard Server consumes 500watts per hour and operates 24 x 365 (4,380Kw per annum) • Electricity costs between 8.5p and 10.3p per Kilowatt • Each Kilowatt used generates 0.537Kg* of CO2 • 85% of IT managers in public institutions feel that tight budgets will be their greatest challenge in the coming years. • 70% (avg) of the costs associated with IT are incurred by system administration burdens and the need to support existing systems. * Source : - The Carbon Trust * * Source: Mummert Consulting
An example.... Assumptions • A school with 500 PCs and 12 servers • Average electricity cost of 9.4p per Kw * * Excludes the cost associated with cooling a server room which is typically 1.3 times the power input for cost and emission calculation
Greening the Education Process through Virtualisation • Virtualisation • A technique that has been proven over the last thirty years • Now available for desktop PCs and Windows Servers • Desktop virtualisation • Server Virtualisation • Adoption of virtualisation technology reduces: - • Power consumption • Carbon emissions • Cost of acquisition • PC and server management costs • Floor/desk space footprint
Greening the Education Process through Virtualisation • Benefits of Desktop Virtualisation • Lower cost of acquisition • 2 – 3 thin clients for the price of a single PC • Reduced manufacturing and distribution inputs • Improved return on IT investment • Doubles/Triples the lifespan of a PC, usually 7 – 10 years • Can even re-use existing older PCs • Reduces power consumption dramatically • Typical thin client device 12w • Enables effective centralised management and support • Reduces time required to deploy new applications • Allows more time for IT developments • Reduces IT support costs
Greening the Education Process through Virtualisation • Benefits of Server Virtualisation • Reduced power and cooling costs • Reduced carbon footprint • Improved return on IT investments • Increased systems performance, resilience and availability • Reduced system maintenance costs • Fast deployment of test environments to reduce risk • Cost containment for future IT deployments • Opportunity to implement disaster recovery plan
