  5. What Are My Options? • College/University • Vocational/Technical • Military

  6. Selecting a College/University • There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. • 4-year, 2-year, public, private or vocational • Size--Under 3,000 students or over 30,000 students • Coed or single sex. • Programs offered • Sports and extracurricular activities

  7. Community Colleges • Programs of 6 months to 2 years designed for student to either transfer into a four-year university (A.A.) or go directly into the workforce (A.S. and Certificate Programs) • Open admissions—anyone with a high school diploma or GED is admitted • SAT/ACT strongly recommended, but not required. Can also use the PERT scores • Many different programs. Also have Honors Programs • 2+2 Admission– student completes A.A. degree then direct admission into State University System.

  8. Public Colleges and Universities • 4 year Programs with last 2 years concentrating in a Major area. Degrees offered are Bachelors and beyond. • Requirements around 3.5 weighted GPA for some, for others looks at “Core” classes • SAT/ACT required • Some require essays • Letters of recommendation not required for SUS

Academic Courses Recommended ForFlorida State Universities • 4 years of English • 4 years of mathematics (Algebra I, II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, AP Calculus or BC College Algebra) • Math must show rigor—Algebra I EOC REQUIRED • 3 years of natural sciences (including lab) • One credit must be Biology • 3 years of social studies • 2 to 4 years of the same foreign language • 4 years of academic electives (especially in math, science or social studies)

  10. Vocational/Technical • Broward County has 3 Technical Centers: • Sheridan/McFatter/Atlantic • Certificate programs that qualifies a person to enter an occupation. • Programs such as: Automotive Technology, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Health Science. • Average length 9-18 months

  11. EvergladesCareer/Technical Programs • Everglades offers a limited number of industry certification programs. • Program is taken at school online during 3 elective periods per day. • Examples are Automotive, Billing & Coding, Game Simulation and Specified Business Programs.

  12. Military Bound? • Be sure to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) to determine military eligibility. • ASVAB will be given at Everglades—October 15, 2014. • Speak with military recruiters regarding opportunities available in the military. • Want to be an officer? Check out college ROTC programs and the military academies—West Point, Annapolis, Air Force Academy, Merchant Marine and Coast Guard.

  14. SAT/ACT • Why Take? • These exams are used by colleges and universities nationwide to assess an applicant’s aptitude for college-level work.

  15. SAT Changes • SAT will be changing its format in Spring 2016. • Writing will be optional. • Format more similar to ACT. • Stay tuned…..

  16. PSAT • All 10th graders will take a PSAT test on October 15, 2014 • 11th graders are encouraged to take the PSAT test. Signup online at school website. If on free/reduced lunch, signup in BRACE office. • Even if you are not planning to apply to college, or if you are considering a program that does not require these tests, it is still a good idea to take them in case your plans change.

Fee Waivers • A limited amount of fee waivers for SAT/ACT tests. • 2 fee waivers each for SAT and ACT for the lifetime of test. • Student must be in the free/reduced lunch program at this school. • Fee waivers should be used for ON TIME REGISTRATIONS. A late fee may be charged after registration deadline date. • Mrs. Gitten only gives out waivers during lunch.

College Fee Waivers SAT • Seniors: If used test fee waiver during 2013/14 school year, up to 4 college fee waivers will be emailed to your SAT account starting in September 2014. • Seniors: If using test fee waiver, for the first time, during 2014/15 school year, college application fee waivers will be emailed when your scores are released (approx. 19 days after test date).

  20. College Fee Waivers (cont) SAT (cont.) • Juniors will receive their fee waivers during Senior year via email to their SAT account. ACT • College fee waivers will be given by Mrs. Gitten, after proof of taking ACT test with a fee waiver.

  21. Applying for Admission • Application: online is preferred by most schools • Transcript: Electronic may be ordered through school website OR request in Guidance. • Letters of recommendation (if applicable) • Essay (if applicable) • Application fee

  22. Applying for Admission cont. • Copy of other required documentation (if applicable) • SAT/ACT test scores must be sent on time prior to deadline • IMPORTANT!! Send all of these parts of the application 7-10 days prior to the deadline. • Keep copies of everything you mail or electronic copies!

  23. Student Self-Reported Academic Record (SSAR) • Must be used if applying to UF and/or FSU ONLY! Due Dec. 1st. • SSAR in lieu of transcript. Do not send transcript!! • Same form can be used for both. Only need to input grades once. • Core classes only!!!! • If you have done grade forgiveness, you need to report both the old and new grades. (THIS IS A MUST) • If accepted to FSU in December, student will need to update with 1st semester grades. • Must submit final transcript!!!

  24. The Common Application • Over 500 colleges and universities accept it. • U Miami is a Common App school. • The Florida state schools DO NOT use it. • Download at www.commonapp.org • Check the site to see if the university requires anything additional (ie. Supplemental essay).

  25. FLORIDA SUS UNIVESITYSYSTEM • 13 Four-Year State Universities • Next chart represents mid 50% of those students that graduated from a Florida high school in June 2014 and started EITHER in Summer 2014 or FALL 2014 • Students who meet the criteria are NOT guaranteed offers of admission

Application Deadlines • Early Decision: Binding Early Oct-November • Early Action: Non-binding (may be different for some) • Most “Early” Deadlines tend to be in early November, however, ALWAYS CONTACT EACH INSTITUTION TO VERIFY ALL DEADLINES!! • Regular Decision • Rolling Decision UCF, USF, UNF, FAMU, FGCU, FIU, FAU, UWF (Apply Sept-Nov.) • UF Deadline: November 1st FSU: October 15th or January 14th

NCAA Eligibility Center • Athletes applying to Division I or II schools MUST fill out an NCAA Clearing House Form. • Optimal time to clear is in 10th or 11th grade. • Seniors who intend to play or walk on must do so. • Go to www.eligibilitycenter.org • The NCAA Code for SAT/ACT testing is 9999.

Federal Student Aid • Every student, who meets certain eligibility requirements can get some type of financial aid regardless of age or family income. • There is more than $150 billion of aid is available every year to students to help cover tuition and fees, room & board, books, and other education-related expenses.

  29. Types of Financial Aid • Grants: Money you do not pay back • Pell Grant ($5,645 per year) • Loans: Money that you borrow. Money must be repaid with interest. • Subsidized • Unsubsidized • Work Study: Work at the college/university and get paid.

  30. EFC • Expected • Family • Contribution • If EFC is $0, then you qualify for full Pell Grant. • If EFC is over $5,645, then you are not Pell elgible.

  31. FAFSA • FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid • Window opens January 1st of senior year. • Family Income Tax information needed to complete the form. • Apply online at www.pin.ed.gov for number for electronic signature. • Apply online at www.FAFSA.gov beginning January 1. Application is FREE!!!!

  32. Florida Financial Aid • Florida Student Assistant Grant (FSAG) is a need-based program for degree seeking Florida undergraduate students attending public institutions. (ie. U Florida, FSU, FIU) • First Generation matching Grant Program is available to all eligible students. • Florida Resident Access Grant (FRAG) is a need-based program for degree seeking Florida undergraduate students attending private universities (ie. U Miami, Nova)

  33. Florida Financial Aid (cont.) • The form must be submitted online at www.FloridaStudentFinancialAid.org after December 1st of senior year. • Deadlines vary. Some colleges/programs set earlier deadlines. • One application used for up to 13 different programs including Bright Futures.

  34. Florida Bright FuturesScholarship Program • Bright Futures Scholarships CAN be used at BOTH public and private institutions in Florida. • CAN NOT BE USED FOR SCHOOLS OUTSIDE OF FLORIDA. • Florida Academic Scholars • Florida Medallion Scholars • Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars

FLORIDA ACADEMIC SCHOLARS • Award amount varies: • 4 year institution $103/credit hour • 2 year institution $63/credit hour • 3.5 weighted GPA Core Classes: 4 English, 4 math, 3 social studies, 3 natural science & 2 foreign language. • 1290 SAT (math/reading) OR 29 ACT • Writing scores are NOT included • 100 hours of community service

  36. FLORIDA MEDALLION SCHOLARS • Award Varies: • 4 year institution $77/credit hour • 2 year institution $48/credit hour • 3.0 weighted GPA Core classes (same as BF Academic) • 1170 SAT (math/reading) OR 26 ACT • Writing scores are NOT included • 75 hours of community service

  37. Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars • Can be used at a technical school or A.S. degree at community college. • 3.0 overall weighted GPA (core academics) and a 3.5 unweighted GPA in a minimum of 3 career and technical education credits in the same program. • SAT Math 440; Reading 440 or • ACT English 17; Reading 18; Math 19 • 30 hours of community service.

  39. Scholarships (cont.) • There is more than $11 billion in merit scholarships • Nearly all colleges offer merit aid scholarships • Not just for “A” student • Many emphasize leadership or school involvement • Check with your job and parent’s employers • Check with church/synagogue

  41. Things to Remember • Keep your grades up—NO SENIORITIS!!! • Keep a calendar with deadlines • Sign up to take SAT/ACT and other required tests prior to deadline. • Send college applications and required documentation on time.
