  1. Innovation, internal competencies and the role of ICT on firms’ learning capabilities: An analysis of the automotive sector.

  2. SOME PRELIMINARY DEFINITIONS… TO MANY… • Data, Information, Knowledge… • Knowledge & the Western Epistemology • Tacit knowledge (Polanyi, 1966) • Explicit knowledge (Polanyi, 1966) • Learning • Technological learning…

  3. FIRM’S KNOWLEDGE BASED ASSETS • Schumpeter & Penrose introduce some elements of the knowledge based theory of the firm… • In the ’90s: the increasing importance of knowledge in the managerial and economic disciplines ((Drucker, 1992; Roth, 1996; Oliveira et al, 2003) • AND MORE DINAMICALLY … LEARNING(March, 1991, Nonaka, 1994, etc.)

  4. THE ROLE OF ICT ON FIRMS’ KNOWLEDGE BASED PROCESSES: • Zack (1999) only explicit knowledge (survey based) • Junnarkar & Brown (1997) - Nonaka based - • Alavi & Leidner (2001) on MIS quarterly • Santos (2001) • Empirical investigation of Bolisano & Scarso (1999)

  5. THE RESEARCH QUESTIONS • HOW do ICT contribute to firms’ technological knowledge based processes? • 2. How does the ICT’ contribution on technological knowledge based processes impact on firms’ innovative capabilities? • 3. What are the variables that affect (and can be affected) the use of ICT in relation with the technological knowledge based processes ?

  6. RESEARCH METHODOLOGIES: • Multiple case studies: CRF FIAT, EFFEDI, VW • Extensive survey of 800 First- Tier Suppliers • Questionnaire for internal survey : CRF FIAT.

  7. MULTIPLE CASE STUDIES WITH AN EXPLORATORY/ DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: • The analysis of the ICT’ impact on knowledge based processes in : • Small and big OEM • Along four different phases of the product cycle • Unit of measure for each case study : a project in a specific phase. • METHODOLOGICALLY INTERESTING: triangulations, …

  8. Dimensional Temporal

  9. Maranello Model Gasolone Model

  10. THE MODIFIED ALAVI & LEIDNER MODEL 1. Knowledge creation : Socialization, externalization, internalization and combination 2. Knowledge storage 3. Knowledge transfer 4. Knowledge application PLUS 5. EXTERNAL EXCHANGE PROCESSES

  11. RESULTS (1): • ICT are alternative new tools that substitute the traditional ones. In contrast with Salter & Gann (2003). • ICT can manage Tacit knowledge ! It is deposited in graphical, video, virtual representations. • Two opposite contributions: diffusion of technological information during the whole product cycle, concentration during design and re-design processes.

  12. RESULTS (2): d) Same ICT’ contribution to small and big organizatons the difference the degree of usage. e) Empirical confirmations of previous indications in relation with : Knowledge storage, firms dimension and sharing.
