Adopt a Glacier An Inquiry Project for Knowles Teaching Fellows
Research Question: How do environmental factors impact glacier parameters?
Method A: 1. Glacier data may be found at: http://www.nsidc.org/data/docs/noaa/g01130_glacier_inventory/index.html#tips 2. At this site, choose a glacier to adopt. Review the data available for your glacier and choose one parameter to analyze over time.
Method B: • What environmental factors could impact your glacier? Why? • Choose one factor and obtain reliable web based data that reports on that factor over time. • 5. Is there a correlation between your data on the glacier parameter and the environmental factor? How do you know?
Helpful Data Sites: • GISS Surface Temperature Analysis • http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/station_data/ • Sunspot number • http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/stp/SOLAR/ftpsunspotnumber.html#international • Global Environmental Database – Greenhouse gases, chlorofluorocarbons, NOx, etc • http://db.cger.nies.go.jp/en/database_B2.html • Air Quality index • http://airnow.gov/index.cfm?action=google_earth.main • Other sources of glacier data: • GLIMS Glacier database (Global Land Ice Measurements from Space) • http://nsidc.org/glims/ • Glacier Fluctuation data: • http://glims.colorado.edu/cgi-bin/mapserv • http://www.socc.uwaterloo.ca/glaciers/glaciers_hist_e.cfm • Glaciers On line time line photos • http://www.glaciers.us/photo.php
Final Product – Power Point or Poster Presentation: Your final presentation should include: General descriptive information about your glacier – Where is it? What other information makes it “special”? Graphic or tabulated data used for comparison. Description of correlation analysis. Final results If possible, predict the future of your glacier based upon the observations that you made.
Final Product – Reflection: • Additionally, include your reflections on the following: • Why did you choose your glacier? • Why did you choose the two factors to compare? • Are the two factors used for comparison necessarily related? How could you determine this? • Were there aspects of NOS included in this project? What were they? • Were there elements of inquiry included in this project? What were they? • How would you modify this activity for use by high school students?
Final Product – Assessment: Brian Williams, anchor of NBC Nightly News has asked to interview you about your work with your glacier. What questions should he ask to make sure the public learns about the changes in your glacier? How will you respond to those questions? Choose a classmate to role play and record the interview. On (date) the class will view the video. Be prepared to answer follow up questions from the class.
