Do Now Write your answers on a piece of paper: What is a force? How do you find net force? What are Newton’s Three Laws of Motion? (Describe each of them as much as possible)
Important Dates and Reminders • Labs ALL week long • Bring your composition book! • Past Due Work Due Friday • News Projects • Exam Reflections • Homework • Extra Credit Opportunities Due FRIDAY • Lab Notebooks • Extra News Project • Blood Drive Friday!
This Week’s Schedule • Each day will be devoted to an inquiry-based lab from one of the units we did: • Day 1: Motion • Day 2: Forces • Day 3: Momentum & Collisions • Day 4: Heat • We skipped the work, power, energy unit since we devoted a whole week to the roller coaster lab
Definition of Force • A force is a push or pull on an object based on its interaction with another objects. • Tug of war is a great example of this • The participants push with their legs off the ground • The participants also pull on the rope
Newton’s 1st Law of Motion Formal Definition: An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Newton’s 1st Law of Motion Simpler Definition: Basically, objects keep on doing what they’re doing unless something tries to change them.
Recognizing Unbalanced Forces Unbalanced Forces happen when forces are opposite but NOT equal Net Force means the OVERALL force. To find it, subtract the smaller force from the bigger force. Net force is in the direction of the bigger force.
Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
Forces Lab: Tug of War • (5 min): Start out by writing the question you would like to test, making a hypothesis for that question, developing a procedure to test that question (be specific!!!) and writing the materials you need. • (7 min): We will test out three different experiments and record them in the table. • (8 min): Complete the analysis and conclusion for YOUR experiment or one of your choice. • Don’t complete this for all three that we do!
Bounciest Slime Competition The object of this is to HAVE FUN The side of the room that creates the bounciest slime in 10 minutes WINS!
The Science of Slime • The glue has an ingredient called polyvinyl acetate, which is a liquid polymer. • The borax links the polyvinyl acetate molecules to each other, creating one large, flexible polymer. • This kind of slime will get stiffer and more like putty the more you play with it.
Notebook Guidelines • Question • Hypothesis • Procedure • Observations • Data • Initial Conclusions Each of these sections must be in your notebook with a HEADING and NEATLY WRITTEN. Table of Contents should be updated as well.
Example Table of Contents Table of Contents • Lab 1: Water Drops on a Penny PG. 1 • Lab 2: Trash Bag Test PG. 4 • Lab 3: Music Effect on Heart Rate PG. 6
Example Lab Entry Lab 1: Water Drops on a Penny August 23, 2011 • Question How is the surface tension of water affected by soap? • Hypothesis The surface tension of water is decreased by soap. • Procedure Carefully add water, one drop at a time…
Conclusions • You will have a DETAILED conclusion in your lab report so this should only be 2-3 sentences! • I want to know your initial reactions to what happened in the lab.
This Week’s Expectations You will need to complete a lab notebook for TWO of the FOUR labs we do this week. Extra entries will be extra credit (highly encouraged).
