The Wandering Jew originates from 13th century medieval folklore . • Legend holds that a Jew taunted Jesus on the way to the Crucifixion and was cursed to walk the earth until the second coming • His appearance varies with the different versions of the legend: shoemaker and tradesman
Through out German history the legend of the Wandering Jew was especially popular • This fed into the Nazi belief that the Jews were responsible for everything that Hitler saw wrong in the country
November 8, 1937 the Nazi’s opened the Eternal Jew Exhibit. It was the largest prewar and anti-Semitic exhibit. • It contained photographs pointing out what the Nazi’s believed to be typical Jewish traits
This is a picture that was over the entrance of the museum. • It was believed that the Jews wanted to take over Germany and turn it into a bolshevik country. • The exhibit traveled all over Germany.
November 29, 1940 the film Der Ewig Jude (The Eternal Jew) opened. • It was a propaganda film that portrayed Jews as filthy, living in squalor and as being parasites and vermin. • The movie was produced by Fritz Hippler who ran the film department in the Propaganda Ministry under Joseph Goebbles.
