Imperialist • – n. • someone who believes in empire building and the takeover domination by an empire. • In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, America was considered an Imperialist nation, as our leaders looked beyond our borders for new land in the Pacific, the Caribbean, and the North.
Subjugation • – n. • act of forcing into submission; defeat; overthrow. • The queen kept the king under subjugation and rendered him useless to the kingdom.
Colleague • – n. • fellow worker; associate. • My colleagues and I work very well together.
Flummoxed • – v. (past) • baffle and confuse. • The amount of toothpaste on the counter flummoxed her, as she thought elves must have deposited it there in the night.
Ambiguity • – n. • doubt about meaning; statement with more than one meaning; vagueness. • The ambiguity of Helen’s questions made Henry feel more confused than before she asked him anything.
Couplet • – n. • two lines of verse. • My favorite poem, “My Mistress’s Eyes are Nothing Like the Sun” is a sonnet with a rhyming couplet at the end.
Meter • – n. • pattern in verse or rhythm in poetry. • The meter of the song makes it sound like a nursery rhyme.
