  2. G.R.A.P.E.S. Geography Religion The ancient Egyptians were polytheistic. The pharaoh was the high priest. Egyptians believed in an afterlife. Pyramids were the tombs of the pharaohs. Pharaohs were buried with lots of treasures • Egypt is located in NE Africa. • Egypt has two regions – Upper and Lower. • The Nile River flows south to north. • The Nile River floods every year and deposits silt that makes fertile land for crops.

  4. Hieroglyphics • What are hieroglyphics? • It is an ancient Egyptian system of writing. • Egyptian hieroglyphics were one of the world’s first writing systems. • The earliest known examples of Egyptian writing are from around 3300 BC and were carved in stone.

  5. Hieroglyphics • The hieroglyphics used more than 600 symbols. Each symbol represented one or more sounds in the Egyptian language. • They could be written either horizontally or vertically.

Writing in Egypt • What is papyrus? • Papyrus is a long-lasting, paper-like material made from reeds (a plant). • Egyptians made papyrus by pressing layers of reeds together and pounding them into sheets. • They could be easily rolled into scrolls. Scribes wrote on papyrus using brushes and ink.

What is a Cartouche? • A cartouche is an oval frame which surrounds the hieroglyphs that make up the name of an Egyptian God. • It represents a looped rope which has the magical power to protect the name that is written inside it. • It was meant to protect against evil spirits in this life and the afterlife.

  15. What is a Pyramid? • Pyramids – tombs for the pharaohs. • Built during a time when Egypt was one of the richest and most powerful civilizations in the world, the pyramids are some of the most magnificent man-made structures in history.

  16. What is a Sarcophagus? • A SARCHOPHAGUS is a stone coffin. • Scholars believe that early coffins were made of materials that dissolved the body quickly, hence the translation of sarcophagus is "flesh eater.” • Members of royalty had sarcophaguses made of solid gold or silver.
