  1. Traffic Control and the Problem of Congestion within the Internet By Liz Brown and Nadine Sur

  2. Project Introduction • We found Caltech research online concerning traffic control on the internet. • Our goal was to interpret these complex mathematical models that use algorithms. • These algorithms are used to help in designing a more effective congestion control system for the internet.

  3. TCP and AQM Mechanisms • The TCP/AQM mechanism is the current system used to model traffic and congestion on the internet. • The Traffic Control Protocol (TCP) • The Active Queue Management (AQM) • The aim of the TCP/AQM algorithm is to maximize the sum of objective functions of sources under constraints on the capacity of channels, this is also known as…

  4. OPTIMIZATION

  5. However… • This model is outdated because it cannot effectively handle the rising amount of traffic on the internet. • Therefore, researchers at Caltech are contemplating whether to modify the existing algorithm or “do it all again” by creating a new algorithm.

  6. Design Objectives • Network Utilization • Decrease Delays • Stability Go Beyond the Fluid Flow Model and create a simple solution that is reliable, controllable and adaptable!

  7. The Fluid Flow Model Aggregate flow: Aggregate price:

  8. Aggregate Flow Variables Total Aggregate Flow, the total rate of link L Routing Matrix with dimensions L x I defined by: 1 if source i uses link l 0 otherwise Rate of transmission of the source in packets/second Time in seconds Delay between source and links

  9. Aggregate Price Variables Total Aggregate Price, or Total Congestion Routing Matrix with dimensions L x I defined by: 1 if source i uses link l 0 otherwise Congestion measure or price Time in seconds Delay between links to sources

  10. But what does this mean? • The fluid flow model takes into account the total flow of packets (of information) from the sources to the links and the total congestion. By doing this, it provides a realistic model of the actual speed of the packets between the links and sources.

  11. Conclusions • Modeling traffic control on the internet is a HUGE and complex research task. • Our objective was to understand and be able to explain the basics of traffic control modeling. • From doing this project we have learned…

  12. Calculus is the foundation for many things that we take for granted, like the internet. • With ourprior knowledge, we were able to understand complex ideas and equations that seem impossible AND…
