Basic Requirements • Accredited Oklahoma degree-granting institutions of higher education • Must serve only Oklahoma students • 3-year proposals only • NO funds from students/parents
General Guidelines • MINIMUM LECTURE • Not traditional classroom experience! • Student exploration, experimentation, career motivation • Rigor, Relevance and Relationships
General Guideline IV.D.5. Each institution is required to stand behind the lawfulness of its Summer Academy program, including the selection process for participants in the Summer Academy. The institution will agree to indemnify the State Regents and/or the Chancellor for any liability they may incur as a result of the institution’s Summer Academy.
Funding Issues • Residential - $600 per FTE • Commuter - $525 • One FTE student week will equal one individual student attending 6 hours or more per day for 5 or more days per week • Partial weeks may receive prorated funding • Funding is limited to two FTE student weeks • 50% of total by April 30; remaining after ALL reports approved in September
Submission of Grant Proposals • Submit electronically to summeracademies@osrhe.edu • Submit by 5:00 PM on Friday, September 28, 2007.
Submission of Grant Proposals (cont.) • A return e-mail will be sent verifying receipt of entire proposal and supporting documents. • Proposal narrative must open in Microsoft WORD • The Proposed Budget form must open in the EXCEL format as provided on website.

Purpose and Goals • Provide stimulating learning opportunities • Build in young people a sense of accomplishment relative to math and science • Develop and promote career and educational aspirations • Fully expose students to college campus experience

What We Hear Adults Say: • They’re poor • Their parents don’t care • Some kids just don’t want to learn • They aren’t college material • Schools don’t have enough money • Not enough parents . . .

An important priority of Summer Academy Program is: “Make success in college an expected and logical result of high school success for all participants with particular emphasis on those young people from subgroups most likely to be underrepresented in the fields of mathematics, science and technology.”
Who are these underrepresented groups? • African Americans • Native Americans • Hispanic Americans • Poor/First Generation
Ignoring this priority is UNACCEPTABLE. • Ignoring relevant Supreme Court rulings and other case law is also UNACCEPTABLE.

Previously submitted questions Question: Budget – are sub-items A-E expense categories per student? Response: Treating the students as a group, list the types and amounts of expenses you anticipate.
Previously submitted questions Question: Explain the FTE student week. Response: Each student attending one week equals one FTE student week. If a student attends for two weeks, it equals two FTE student weeks.
Previously submitted questions Question: Can we have more than one academy? Can our academy last longer than one week? Response: You may write your proposal for more than one academy. Each academy can be up to two weeks.
Previously submitted questions Question: Is there a limit on the number of students we can serve? Response: No. Evaluators will look closely at how you plan to supervise and provide appropriate learning experiences for ALL of the students you say you are planning to serve.
Timelines • Proposals due: Friday, Sept. 28, 2007 • Regents Board Approval: Nov. 29, 2007 • Notification of Awards and Institutional Paperwork: Dec./Jan. • Mandatory Orientation Meeting for Awardees: January 18, 2008 @ 1:30 p.m. • First half of funds disbursed: April 2008 • Final Reports due: September 30, 2008 • Final funds disbursed after reports approved
Timelines related to Recruitment & Selection • Awardees may start distributing information any time after Orientation • Regents Poster mailed and website up by March 1 • Applications accepted beginning on March 15 • Student selection begins on April 1
