What is teen depression? • Teen depression is a common but serious mental illness typically marked by sad or anxious feelings • Many students in high school don’t know where to go for mental health treatment or believe that treatments won’t help.
Depression in school • Depression is a major problem in school, Mainly because of the increase of high school suicides. • In some cases, teachers or other school staff member may be able to recognize that a student is suffering depression • Depression not only does depression impact learning but also impacts general quality life.
Causes of depression • Depression does not have a single cause ;however, there are factors that can lead to it. • Depression can be cause by some people carrying genes. • Depression can be also cause by your surrounding and life experiences. Any stressful situation may trigger depression and high schools students encounter a number of stressful situation
Symptoms of depression • Different people experience different type of symptoms of depression. Some examples are: • Sad • Anxious • Guilty • Helpless • Loss of interested in activities you use to do easily • Problems with falling asleep
Types of depression: • The most 3 common types of depression are: • Major depressive disorder-symptoms are disabling and interfere with everyday activities such as studying, eating, and sleeping. • Dysthymic disorder-the symptoms last for 2 years or more and is less sever than major depressive disorder. • Minor depression disorder-are usually for a short period of time however people with it are at a higher risk of developing major depressive disorder.
Why do adolescent get depression? • Teen depression may result from environmental stress. • Teenagers can develop feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy over their grades • School performance, social statues with peers, sexual orientation, or family life can each have a major effect on how a teen feels.
How to get rid of depression? • Some treatments for depression are: • Therapy- it helps you figure out what’s going off track in your life, and how to change it back. • Lifestyle changes- getting more exercise so you can clear your mind of everything. • Antidepressant drugs- sometimes prescription medicines can help get your brain chemistry back to normal.
