Highlight of Current Activities (1) • In line with ETSI proposals made to the CEPT and EC the following milestones have been achieved: • Amendment of the ECC Decision (06)12 on supplementary regulatory provisions to Decision ECC/DEC/(06)04 for UWB devices using mitigation techniques (Detect-and-Avoid, Low-Duty-Cycle and Transmit Power Control) and EU Decision 2007/131/EC • Inclusion of UWB in CEPT ERC Recommendation 70-03 – like other SRDs • Technical specifications for UWB DAA and its related tests are defined and tests in progress (ETSI TS 102 754 and ETSI TR 102 763). A revision of the Harmonized European Standard EN 302 065 is in progress to include all mitigation techniques.
Highlight of Current Activities (2) • Additional work on UWB based sensor technologies for the following applications has been carried out: • Short Range Radar operating at 77-81 GHz: ETSI EN 302 264 • Object discrimination and Characterization:ETSI EN 302 498 • Object Identification and surveillance: ETSI EN 302 499 • Location Tracking devices (3 types): EN 302 500, EN 302 501 and EN for traffic application • Building Material Analysis: ETSI EN 302 435 • Location Tracking for Emergency Services: ETSI EN 302 711
Highlight of Current Activities (3) • Most current activities • Remaining ETSI proposals for investigations in CEPT are underway to complete European regulation for UWB: • Onboard aircraft • Emergency services use • Fixed outdoor usage scenarios • Specific cases in the automotive and transport environment
Strategic Direction • The development of appropriate testbeds and new measurement methods continues. ETSI is a partner in the EU project Walter that also deals with these issues. (ETSI TR 103 181) • Future work may also include the development of access layer technologies based on UWB as well as testing of UWB based protocols.
Challenges • More work on better global harmonization of the regulation is needed (e.g. 77-81 GHz SRR)
