Do Now • Take 2-3 minutes to jot (write) down anything you know about MLA formatting or documentation. • Be prepared to share from your list with the rest of the class. • Since you are not turning this in you can write on scrap paper.

What is MLA? According to Purdue OWL… • Summary: • MLA (Modern Language Association) style is most commonly used to write papers and cite sources within the liberal arts and humanities. In other words… • We use MLA to standardize the communication of written thoughts, ideas, observations, and creative output in a manner that assures credit is given to the originator of any thought, idea, observation, or creative output. In other words, while I am free to comment or use the work of someone else as an entry into my own thoughts, etc… I am not free to claim them as my own. To do so is to steal and in academic circles is taken very seriously. If in doubt, err on the side of caution and give credit if there is even the slightest possibility that an idea you have was sparked by someone else.
An Aside About Purdue’s OWL (Online Writing Lab) • It is one of the best and most respected sites in use today and whenever you are in doubt as to how to cite a source, you can be assured of finding your answer within it is electronic files and databases. • You should consider making it a favorite site and visiting it often. Much of the information we will be sharing with you this week comes from this site or can be found there.
For the remainder of this week Tuesday and Wednesday Thursday and Friday We will round out our dive into MLA formatting by practicing writing proper entries into a work cited page. We will also take a look at the your work so far making suggestions as to ways you can improve your research essay. • We will look at how to properly format your paper using MLA style. • The goal will be to have the paper due next week completely formatted in the appropriate manner before you leave class. • We will also begin looking at setting up the works cited page and properly documenting all sources.
The Paper! • You are going to write a paper, using MLA formatting and documentation, just like they do in college and the world of business. • You will be graded on both completeness of content and on form. In other words, we want you to write something of substance and organizational beauty. • The essay must cover each of the following points: • What career are you currently most interested in pursuing? • What do you need to accomplish in order to enter into this career field? (Be very specific) • What have youdone so far in pursuit of this goal? • How are you going to go about achieving this goal? • It must be typed and turned in on turnitin.com no later than January 18that 11:59 p.m. (1000 words minimum) You didn’t think we were going to have you learn all this stuff and not have you do something with it did you? Of course we have a nefarious purpose is teaching you this stuff—we want you to write a paper.
