Monthly Professional DevelopmentOverview • All four elementary schools and the middle school received credit for one hour of professional development. • This past month’s agenda included strategies on differentiation, websites to incorporate into instruction, and some reading strategies for RTI. • Over 75 teachers attended the training and received various resources.
Resources Provided to all elementary teachers that attended the trainings: • Traveling Backpack • Word Attack Folders • Cdof writing resources • Differentation Manual • Handouts of instructional strategies • Quick checklist for elementary websites • Actual examples of student work and pieces
Feedback • On 75 surveys, 74 graded the training as being a 3- very helpful. • Some of the following comments were used to describe the training: very informative, will use info immediately, this will keep me motivated, love the resources we get, great job, and can’t wait until you return! • The following were noted as the most helpful ideas given: yes /no cards, website list, literary quilt, easy to make manipulatives, test question formats, and traveling backpacks.
Upcoming Training Dates and Agendas: • The next trainings will target 3rd-8th grade teachers. LCMS is scheduled for October 28th. Other schools are TBA. • The focus will be on “marking up the text.” This strategy will show teachers how to teach students to analyze any reading piece, math problem, or text by reading for a purpose, reading critically. • Teachers will be given one hour of PD, folders with steps and examples, and markers for students to use.
MAP testing • LCMS began testing yesterday with 7th and 8th grade reading. • The elementary schools will test this week beginning with 6th grade reading. • Teachers are given very detailed reports on each student that contains their RIT score, specific goal strands, and instructional strategies to improve each goal strand for the student. • Overall data for the schools will be provided to the board once testing is completed.
Hard Work Café Students will be able to earn one hour in the café based on their RIT scores. Each student will have a goal specified just for them. Upon meeting that goal, they will enjoy Dairy Queen, Rockband, Wii, music, board games, and much more in the Hard Work Café!!!!
Other Areas in Progress: • Gifted and Talented Plan: the Raven IQ test will be ordered for 4th grade students and up. Once students are nominated, tested, and selected, meeting with parents will be held to discuss a plan of action. • A formal plan for the district will be finalized and presented to the board for approval next month. (see example) • Each plan will contain steps for teachers to nominate students for GT. Also, it will contain info about the plan that will developed if accepted into GT as well as recommended services.
District Website • Board members- decide whether to have link on site with a biography about you • Also, decide whether to have school email account, business cards, and if you would like to do a monthly blog. • Select template for district
