David wanted to build a בַּיִת for the Lord so that He would be glorified in the nations and by His people.
In David’s eyes, the בַּיִת is greater than the אֹהֶלand God deserves the best. (2)
The LORD responds to David and says that instead, HE will build a בַּיִת for David himself, and that out of that בַּיִת a בַּיִת for HisName will come. (11b-12)
Solomon ultimately completes the בַּיִת for the LORD, but the rule of a Davidic heirends not long later.
The Gospel of John says that Jesus (a blood-heir of David’s family) came from Heaven and tabernacled on earth.
After the ascension, Jesus endows His disciples with His very Spirit, Who now indwells them. This makes theChurch God’s established בַּיִת, established by a Davidic heir whose resurrection reign will never end.
Which state of residence do we offer the LORD? Does He have a fixed place in our lives as a בַּיִת, or do we give Him the nomad’squarters of a אֹהֶל? Are we a house or a tent for His name?
