  1. Monsoon – Northeast Monsoon BOO Dyeo Moh Zhi Yuan Choo Guan Hao

  2. Monsoon Winds • Regional wind patterns • Hence brings seasonal changes in precipitation • Also lead to wet or dry seasons

  3. Coriolis Effect • Monsoon winds are affected by the Coriolis Effect • It’s a force produced by the Earth’s rotation • It causes the bending or deflection of winds • It is strongest near poles, weak in the tropics and not felt at the equator.

  4. Where Northeast monsoon occurs • Occurs: • Australia • Mostly parts of Asia • Starts from India and ends at Australia

  5. Why does it occur? • Sun retreats South around the end of the year • Causes Northern landmass of the Indian subcontinent to cool off rapidly. • The wind heads toward Australia and cools down along the way • Picks up moisture as it travels over the Indian Ocean • Northeast Monsoon occurs.

  6. Effects • Less rain at that period of time around peninsular India • Brings heavy rain to Australia
