Bangla Study – Formal and Informal • Education at home • Education at school • Bangla Schools run by the community groups – 5 schools, 250 students • Bangla Schools run by the government – 3 schools, 250 students • What is mother language • First language spoken, mother means source or origin • Why mother language deserves to be taught • Friedrich the II of Hohenstaufen (1194-1250)proved • Language is prerequisite of human life • Human being requires a human relationship to survive
Bangla Study – Formal and Informal -contd • Keep up identity and culture • Enhance cognitive development • Increase self-esteem of adolescents and young adults • Tempe HSC results improved remarkably overall, Peter James
Bangla Prosar Committee Initiatives • Launched campaign in 1999 • Student database • Meeting with government officials • Had a verbal agreement in 2005 • At least 10 pupils to start SSCL class • At least 15 to be enrolled each year • NSW BoS would consider HSC accreditation end of 2008
SSCL Course • Bangla included in 2006 in Dulwich Hill Centre • Started with 1, enrolled upto 17 • 3-4 new enrolment in 2007 & 2008 each, dropped more • 6-7 new enrolment in 2009, currently 15 students • Second centre in 2008 in Randwick • Commenced with 11, enrolled 15 • 3-4 new enrolment in 2009, dropped most , currently 7-8 • Struggling and failed to keep commitment
Present Status of Bangla in National and State Curriculum • Bangla dropped from VCE and CCAFL (Collaborative Curriculum and Assessment Framework for Languages Australia) in 2005 • NSW BoS allow Bangla in SSC & HSC even for 1 student • No accreditation for HSC • Need only 15 students enrolled for HSC Bangla among 60-70 sit for the exam each year. BPC Goals • Get Bangla back into CCAFL • Get Bangla included in HSC • Get Bangla verily accepted by the Community
Goals can be achieved with Community Supports • To make the community aware, BPC needs: • Active support from celebrities – local & outside • Active support media • Active support from writers, journalists, social workers, and elites • Involvement of pro-active parents • Comprehensive campaign
Political Support • State politicians must be brought to the scene • 33 community language subjects are accredited in BoS for HSC • 4 new subjects for heritage speakers of Chinese(Mandarin), Japanese, Indonesian and Korean added this year • Should we deserve anything??
