  2. Genoa Province Genoa Province (NUTS III) is a public administration with competence in several themes. In particular, the 08 Environment Area deals with: • Territorial planning • Issuing authorisation for waste disposal • Verification on waste disposal • Decontamination of polluted areas

LAG is a local development agency composed by 23 public and private partners as Province of Genoa (Nuts III), Chamber of Commerce, SME Associations (agricultural, handcraft, tourism and commerce, Public transport companies... The principal objective of LAG is the promotion of the territory, by trying to merge investments in the zone of their own competence, in order to favour the development of SME enterprises. Another objective of LAG is improve quality of life in rural areas. The LAG Appennino genovese, Liguria – Italy

  4. ITALY Where we are • Liguria(Nuts II): an Italian region, divided in four “Provinces”. • The City of Genoa (abitanti 632.366) è il capoluogo della Liguria. • Province of Genoa (Nuts III) ha 901.533 abitanti

  5. Total urban solid waste: 478.836 t/annum Total differentiated waste collected: 62.043 Percentage of differentiated waste collected 13% SUR production per head: 531 kg/annum Waste production in the province of Genoa

The distribution of waste • The areas which produce most waste are those with a greater population, in other words the urban , coastal and tourist zones. • An increase in waste is evident during the summer period (season of greater influx). In some communes the resident population triples in the summer. • In tourist areas and in historical centres in particular, it is necessary to pay particular attention to urban furniture and therefore, the system of waste collection (tourist resorts).

  7. Provincial planning • ·Achieving 41% of differentiated waste collection from the total solid urban refuse at the earliest. • ·The creation of an incinerating plant • · The rationalisation of the six existing refuse tips

Management • ·The management of refuse shouldered by communes (67) which will be able to tale avail of public/private companies • ·According to national regulations Communes must join up at a provincial level into Optimum Territorial Areas (OTA). The provincial administration plays a coordinating role.

Management Aims • To improve the system of collection (street systems, door to door for businesses and services…) • To Reduce non-differentiated refuse • To increase public awareness • To initiate an organised collection of organic waste from domestic consumption to make compost with brief reuse circuits, particularly adapt for urban areas

  10. Landfill • Presently, the only existing plants for the disposal of Solid Urban Refuse in the Province of Genoa • There are six landfill and the one in Genoa (Scarpino) receives 82% of the provinces production

Aims of Differentiated Collection • In this operation, the consumer plays a leading role in the success or lack of it. • Actions to increase public awareness • Informative actions on possible destination of the post-consumer product • To supply an efficient collecting system and improve the system

  12. Tasks of the project 1) Organization Structure in waste management • Study and exchange of experiences with partners of EWM project. 2) Landfill and reuse • Study alternative models to landfills together with partners of EWM project.

  13. 3) Separate Waste collection • Data base about regional information on separate waste collection in tourist areas • Project plan for testing low impact system to collect waste in tourist areas • Communication and information actions at local, regional and international level. To create a best practises manual for people.
