John 15:9-11 “9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. 10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. 11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full”
Philippians 4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice”
What is Joy or Rejoicing? • Rejoice - chairo, a primary verb; to be “cheer”ful, i.e. calmly happy or well-off; impersonally, especially as salutation (on meeting or parting), be well:--farewell, be glad, God speed, greeting, hail, joy(- fully), rejoice. • Strong
Why Rejoice? • Joy is a fruit of the spirit - Galatians 5:22-23 • Joy is the glad and calmness resulting from one being obedient to God - Colossians 1:10-11 • Full joy comes from keeping the commands of God, thus abiding in His doctrine and Spirit which enables and sustains our joy - John 15:11
Why Rejoice? The apostles did not have an exclusive right to joy as shown in Philippians 4:4; they shared it… • He tells us the place - “in the Lord” • He tells us the time - “always” • He issues the command - “rejoice” In this lesson we will look a number of reasons revealed in scripture to have joy or rejoice
