“Quad” means 4. Figures with four sides are called “quadrilaterals”.
Quadrilaterals can be classified by their angles or pairs of sides.
“Poly” means “many”. So any polygon with 4 sides is called a “quadrilateral” because it has many sides.
Let’s look at some different types of quadrilaterals. rhombusparallelogram trapezoidrectanglesquare
rectangle 4 right angles also called a parallelogram
rhombus opposite sides are parallel and all sides are the same length
square 4 right angles All sides are the same length. It is a parallelogram, rhombus, & a rectangle.
What is the difference between a rhombus and a square? A square has 4 right angles. A rhombus does not.
So a square is also a rhombus, but a rhombus is not a square!
parallelogram 2 pairs of parallel sides
trapezoid only one pair of parallel sides
