UCSD Academic Senate Graduate Council Academic Senate Review: Proposed MAS Programs The role of Graduate Council and CCGA in reviewing proposals for self-supporting programs is to: • Ensure the proposed program conforms to Graduate Council policies and Divisional and Systemwide Regulations; • Assess the purpose of the proposed program and how it fits with UCSD’s academic offerings.
UCSD Academic Senate Graduate Council Three Areas to Address • Function: What function does the proposed MAS program serve in the University’s and department’s academic enterprise? • Students: What is the target student population? What is the impact on current students? • Resources: What is the impact on academic and administrative resources?
UCSD Academic Senate Graduate Council Function • Demand for the mas degree: Is there a demonstrated need? • Purpose and scope: What is the overall purpose and scope of the program? What makes it distinct from existing programs and how does it relate to these? • Professional training: How will the program meet the goals of working professionals?
UCSD Academic Senate Graduate Council Students • Standards to maintain quality • Address how the program will sustain a high quality student population and create flexibility to accommodate the unique backgrounds of professional students • Impact on students in state-supported programs • Checks to prevent student inequities • If proposed program uses existing courses, effect on state-supported Master’s and PhD students • Student Financial Support
