Angles in Journalism How will your reader see your subject?
Angle • Angle refers to the way at which you will approach the topic/subject of a feature article (or any article). • Think about yourself. If someone was going to describe you, they could use many words, stories, examples. • A feature article is no different. You have limited space to cover the subject. You can make it a biography.
Angle gives an article focus. • It is essentially your thesis you are trying to prove. • Angles helps your reader see your perspective. • They should finish reading the article and feel grounded, not confused.
How do I find my angle as an author? • You need to consider three things • Topic • What things describe/define your topic? • How do you want your reader to relate?
Oscar Pistorius Example • Subject: Oscar Pistorius • Descriptions: • Hero—overcame a lot • Controversial—does he have an advantage • Challenged—still working hard to reach goal • Strong—physically stronger than other para-olympians • Disappointment—made world championships, but didn’t qualify for final, left of championship relay team
Choices • You now have several angles by which to approach your subject, Oscar Pistorius. • Once you have your angle, you can start laying out the points you want to make. • Who you want to interview and quote. • What examples, stories, you will share to show your angle.
Mapping your story • Once you have your topic and angle, you need to map your feature article. Make an outline or make lists about the following things. • Biographical info needed • Who do I need to interview? • What information am I looking for? • What details are essential to share?
Feature Piece assignment • Select one of the following projects to complete for your feature piece assignment. • Choose an athlete, former athlete, or sporting event from our community and write a feature article about him or her. • Film a 10-15 minute mini-documentary about an athlete, former athlete, or sporting event in our community. This piece will be viewed by the class. • If you don’t want to do it about one athlete, you can also write it about a sport, or sports culture in our community, however, your angle will need to be specific.
Possible Topics • An athlete who inspires you • An athlete who overcame something • An athlete who was impressive • Coaches and their jobs • Famous folk lore about certain games. • Games that were “firsts” • New medical procedures in sports
