  1. Ecosystem Goal TeamIntroduction and Overview Presented by Kent H. Hughes

  2. Goal Team / Program Areas • Ecosystem Goal Objectives - Protect, restore and manage the use of coastal and ocean resources though an ecosystem approach to management. • Program Areas: • Aquaculture • Coastal & Marine resources • Coral Reef Conservation • Ecosystem Observations • Ecosystem Research • Enforcement • Fisheries Management • Habitat • Protected Species

  3. Outline of Theme Presentations • Aquaculture (AQC):Foster and manage environmentally responsible and sustainable marine aquaculture for food production and stock enhancement. • Coastal & Marine Resources (CMRP): Protects, restores, and manages coastal and marine habitats in U.S. coastal states and territories, maintains or improves the quality of these ecosystems and the resources that depend on them, manages coastal land uses, reduces the vulnerability of lives and property to coastal hazards, and educates the public on actions and decisions that impact coastal and ocean resources. Included programs are the Coastal Zone Management Program, National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS), National Marine Sanctuary Program (NMSP), Marine Protected Area Center (MPA), Coastal Services Center, Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technology (CICEET) and the Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program (CELCP)

  4. Outline of Theme Presentations • Coral Reef Conservation (CRCP):Supports the effective management and sound science to preserve, sustain, and restore valuable coral reef ecosystems. • Ecosystems Observations (EOP): Provide trusted scientific information to foster healthy marine ecosystems for current and future generations. Capabilities include: Fisheries Monitoring and Assessment; Protected Species Monitoring and Assessment; Ecosystems Monitoring, Assessments and Forecasting; Economic and Sociocultural Monitoring and Assessments; and Data Management, Technology Transfer, Education, and Outreach. • Ecosystems Research (ERP): Conducts applied research and development to provide scientific information, tools, and forecasts for implementing and evaluating ecosystems management.

  5. Outline of Theme Presentations • Enforcement (ENF):Federal law enforcement agency charged with gaining compliance with federal marine conservation management laws and regulations that protect our nation’s living marine resources. • Fisheries Management (FMP):Charged with maintaining fisheries at levels that will support sustainable fisheries, their related ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. • Habitat (HAB):Protects, restores and promotes stewardship of coastal and marine habitats that are essential to the nation’s marine life. • Protected Species:
