MISSION • Direct and support research that contributes to scientific knowledge related to cancer control • Collaborate in the application of scientific knowledge to the design, implementation and evaluation of effective programs
Selected Highlights • Special cancer monographs “in press” • Surveillance updates • CPCRN update • Quality of CRC screening • Population estimates • Survivorship research
Future Impact of HPV vaccine/HPV tests ABHACUS: Assessing the Burden of HPV-Associated Cancers in the US, special supplement monograph (23 manuscripts) in press Cancer (August 2008) Cancers included: • cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal, oropharynx and oral cavity
Cancer Occurrence in AI/AN populations Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, 1975-2004, Featuring Cancer in American Indians and Alaska Natives, Espey DK et al., Cancer 2007;110:2119-52. Surveillance Updates • Revised cancer screening questions: • BRFSS 2008: new questions that distinguish colonoscopy from flex. sig. • NHIS 2010 cancer control supplement: new questions proposed to address HPV, emerging screening technologies, survivorship • Upcoming publications (in press): • CRC screening data (2005 NHIS) • Trends in mammography (2006 BRFSS)
Surveillance Updates • New surveys of provider behaviors: • NCI/CDC/AHRQ survey of primary care physicians’ cancer screening recommendations and practices • CDC national survey of physician attitudes and practices regarding PSA • General practitioners’ awareness and adherence to ovarian cancer screening guidelines (with U. Wash.). • NAMCS 2006-10 added questions on screening for cervical cancer
The Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (CPCRN) provides an infrastructure for applying relevant research to local cancer prevention and control needs. • Mission of CPCRN: To accelerate the adoption of evidence-based cancer prevention and control in communities. • Vision of CPCRN: The Network will be engaged in research and practice activities that span the translation continuum from discovery to the dissemination and adoption of effective interventions.

Quality of Colonoscopy • CO-RADS: Colonoscopy Reporting and Data System • Developed by the Quality Assurance Task Group of the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable with support and leadership of DCPC/CDC, in partnership with ACS • Specifies the elements that should be included in all colonoscopy reports and quality indicators to be monitored • Lieberman D, Nadel M, Smith R, et al. Standardized colonoscopy reporting and data system. Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (2007) 65:757-766. • In progress: development of guidance to help primary care providers recognize high quality endoscopy
Population Estimates • Research on estimating the number of women eligible for the NBCCEDP; Collaboration between CDC and Census Bureau • Available Data (through 2006) from CPS ASEC* Tabulations • Women • 2-year and 3-year state level estimates of the number of low-income (at or below 200 percent or at or below 250 percent of the federal poverty threshold), uninsured women by age group (18-64, 40-64, and 50-64) • The National estimates include the same information by race and ethnicity • Men • State level estimates of low-income uninsured men by age, and national level tabulations of low-income uninsured men by age, race, and ethnicity *Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement
Population Estimates • Future Data – Modeled Based Estimates • By the end of FY08, county level estimates of the NBCCEDP eligible population (low-income uninsured women by age) will be published on the Census Bureau’s web site (with links to the CDC website) • FY09, publish state and county estimates • Possibility of annual production of model-based state estimates of low-income uninsured women by age, race, and ethnicity and county estimates of low-income uninsured women by age
Current Research on Survivorship • Examining health behaviors among CRC survivors 5 years after cancer. • Assessing quality of life and choice in prostate cancer treatment (with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Res. Cntr, Univ. S. Cal., Univ. Texas, and the Medical Univ. of S.C.). • Evaluating the effectiveness of a nationally-available survivorship program among a disadvantaged population (with UAB). • Collaborating with researchers at the ACS to examine lifestyle changes made by cancer survivors 2, 6, and 11 yrs after diagnosis.
