Warm-up 11/9/09 • No, I did not get your exams graded • Welcome to chemistry week! • Does this equation violate the law of conservation of mass? NaCl + MgO Na2O + MgCl2
Agenda 11/9/09 • Formula worksheet • Notes on balancing equations Learning Goal: • Be able to read and understand the components in a chemical formula • Balance equations & apply that to the conservation laws
Conservation Laws • Mass/Matter /Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, they can only be rearranged. Mass of Wood + fire = mass of ashes, smoke, etc
What does this mean? • The sum of the reactants must equal the sum of the products in a chemical reaction • Is this always true? • Chemical equations must be balanced to demonstrate the law of conservation of matter.
Balancing an Equation • Use coefficients, which are whole numbers in front of a formula that balances the number of atoms in the reaction • Never change the SUBSCRIPTS! • The total # of each type of atom on the reactants side must equal the total # of each type of atom on the products side.
Steps for Balancing Steps #1 & 2: NaCl + MgO Na2O + MgCl2 Na = 1 Na = 2 Cl = 1 Cl = 2 Mg = 1 Mg = 1 O = 1 O = 1
Steps for Balancing Step #3 & 4: 2NaCl + MgO Na2O + MgCl2 Na = 1 x 2 = 2 Na = 2 Cl = 1 x 2 = 2 Cl = 2 Mg = 1 Mg = 1 O = 1 O = 1 Now the atoms on the left = the atoms on the right!!!
Answers to equations on back a. 4 Fe + 3 O2 2 Fe2O3 b. 2NaOH + MgCl2 Mg(OH)2 + 2NaCl c.2AlBr3 + 3BaCl2 2AlCl3 + 3BaBr2 d. Na2O + MgCl2 2NaCl + MgO
Acid Rain Equations: • 3NO2 + H2O 2HNO3 + NO • SO3 + H2O H2SO4(balanced)
