What is National English? • Nationals are new qualifications in all subjects in Scotland from May 2014 • They replace Standard Grade • National are available at different levels: from National 2 to National 5 • All National Courses are made up of units which you must pass to get the qualification • There is also an Added Value Unit for National 4 and 5

National 5 English is a demanding course For National 5 English there is externalassessment: An Exam (70% of your final grade) A Folio (30% of your final grade) Graded as A-C or Fail National 4 English is a more straightforward course For National 4 English there is no external assessment: you must pass assessments in school. You must also complete an extra unit (Added Value) Graded as Pass/Fail What is the difference between National 4 and 5 English?
Exam: Paper 1: Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation (30 marks) Read an unseen passage and answer questions Paper 2: Critical Reading (40 marks) Write an essay about a text studied in class Answer questions on an extract of a text studied in class Folio: 2 pieces of writing: (30 marks) One Creative/Personal One Discursive What’s in the National 5 English External Assessment?
Our expectations of pupils in S4 • Arrive to class ready to learn • Have a pen/pencil • Have your folder every day • Have your homework diary • Work cooperatively with your teacher and others in the class • Take responsibility for your own learning • Manage and meet homework deadlines • Be prepared to work hard
What do we do now, in June 2013? • In June 2013, you will complete an important unit of work – the Added Value Unit • In June 2013, you will sit your first National English assessment – the Added Value assignment
What is National 4 Added Value? • This is an assignment (task), where you: • Use your language skills to investigate a topic, by • Reading texts • Selecting information from texts • Presenting your findings in writing • Answering oral questions on your topic
FAQs • How do I know whether I should do National 4 or 5 English? Your teacher will advise you as the year goes on. We want as many people as possible to do National 5 English, but we also want everyone to do a course they are capable of passing. • What happens if you fail a unit? You can sit a re-assessment later. • Can you fail National 5 English? Yes. A total of 45 or under for the folio and exam is a fail.

If you pass National 5 English in May 2014, you can go straight to Higher English in S5 6. If I do National 4, what do I do in S5? You can do National 5 English in S5 and even Higher English in S6.
