The Continuously Habitable Zone (CHZ) Earth’s Unique Place in the Solar System
The Earth is a unique planet in our solar system for the following reasons: • - Water • - Distance from the Sun • - Size • - Rotation • - Only Planet with Life
Earth is the only planet where water exists in all three states in significant amounts. Earth’s nickname “The Blue Planet” is due to large, blue bodies of water seen from space. Icy Glaciers Liquid Bodies of Water Gas Clouds WATER!
The Earth’s distance from the sun falls in a temperature range where an abundance of water can exist in a liquid state. Any closer and water would evaporate. Any further and water would stay frozen. DISTANCE FROM THE SUN
The Earth is just the right size for gravity to hold onto its gaseous atmosphere. Smaller bodies (like the moon or Mars) have lost their atmospheres because their gravity is not powerful enough to keep it in place. Gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn have held on to their original atmosphere of hydrogen, helium and methane in high concentrations, poisonous to life on Earth. SIZE DOES COUNT – WHEN IT COMES TO THE EARTH!! SIZE
The 24 hour rotation (spinning of Earth on its axis) is fast enough that temperatures do not remain below freezing for too long during the night, nor too hot during the day. ROTATION
The Earth lies within a narrow “Continuously Habitable Zone” or CHZ where a planet could have surface temperatures between -80˚C and 100˚C over a long enough period of time for life to evolve. CONTINUOUSLY HABITABLE ZONE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJXSSYyIVqw
