Ottawa Network for Education WHAT DO WE DO? • We bring education and community leaders together to discuss education-related issues. • We develop and deliver innovative, collaborative programs that • remove barriers to learning and provide targeted learning support for students • help students explore careers and develop work readiness skills 40 programs launched since 1985. 2,436 volunteers in schools in 2013-14.

Junior Achievement A gap exists in the curriculum for business skills and financial literacy. Volunteers help bridge the Gap. • JA is the world’s largest not-for-profit organization that helps young people learn about business. Financial Literacy | Entrepreneurship | Work Readiness • 122 countries | 17 Canadian charters | 55 years in Canada • 243,000 students | 14,681 volunteers • ExperientialJA programs are offered free of charge • Present a pre-set program in class (French or English) • Team of two volunteers; teacher supports volunteers • 2013-2014 Ottawa: 5,214 students; 198 classrooms; 62 schools

JA Company (grades 9-12) Entrepreneurship | Financial Literacy | Workforce Readiness • Hands-on 15 week program (3 hrs/ week) • Students are mentored by volunteer business advisors to plan, organize and operate a real business. • Ideation, election of management team, business plan, bootstrapping, production, sales and marketing, CSR, liquidation and shareholder meeting • 10 Companies 2014-15 (vs. 4 last year)

Study: “Making an Impact” Measurable outcomes • For every $1 invested into JA programs; $45 is created in economic prosperity • Improved graduation rates; direct and indirect job creation • Junior Achievers are 50% more likely to open their own business • Junior Achievers earn 50% more, on average, than those who do not benefit from our programs. • Over 75% of Achievers cite JA as having a significant impact in developing financial literacy and decision making skills.
