HAGAR Walking with abused, exploited, and rejected women and children toward life in all its fullness ensuring holistic healing, social rehabilitation and economic empowerment, and inspiring others to share that journey.
HAGAR INTERNATIONAL- an update • A very tough year in terms of funds: • Many foundations and major donors have themselves suffered with the Global Financial Crisis. • Most of our fund raising offices are just establishing themselves, with some as much as 50% down on their annual targets • However: support has begun to come from the UK, including TBN members – for which we are very grateful. • Refining through fire: the financial squeeze has helped to refine and reshape our projects, forcing some hard decisions which leave us with a more effective set of projects and people. We have been able to continue our core work.
HAGAR NGO - an update • Hagar was also able to open in Vietnam and Afghanistan and despite very limited resources, some effective work has now begun with activities focused on support for trafficked and abused women and children. • At the same time HAGAR International has been going through a leadership transition and reorganization. Growing from a personality driven single country entity to sustainable, multi-country organization. It has been tough and at times, painful, but a way forward has now been charted and we are optimistic for the future.
HAGAR Social Enterprises- An Update • After reviewing our enterprises we consolidated to focus on what we do well. From three very diverse areas to one. • This was driven by our desire: • To be excellent at what we do • To have the greatest social impact/ number of jobs for the capital invested • To be able to offer the women we work with good career options, not only with us, but beyond • To offer jobs with a relatively low entry skill level • We sold two businesses and choose to focus on our Catering and Facilities Management: 2009 Jan- Sept: Revenue: $823,000; Operating profit of 8.9%; 135 staff; 12 contracts • The review included relooking at how our assets can best serve us, resulting in the leasing of the factory to provide a steady income, and lower costs.
HAGAR- needs • We are seeking your prayers, contributions, ideas and contacts to address the following areas: • Financial: • Specific project financial needs: four of our Cambodia projects have significant funding gaps for 2010 (catch-up education, community care for abused children, community rehabilitation of children with a disability, and career pathway training for women). • Vietnam and Afghanistan are just starting out and need pioneers to help them grow • Hagar International need support for the completion of the transition in leadership • Hagar United Kingdom: with plans to start up an office in the UK support is needed particularly for funds to hire the Executive Director.
